Famke Janssen is elated to see her former X-Men costars return for Avengers: Doomsday. However, at the moment, it looks like she won’t be returning to reprise her role as Jean Grey. The actress played the character in X-Men (2000), X2: X-Men United (2003), X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), and reprised the role in cameos for The Wolverine (2013) and X-Men: Days Of Future Past (2014).

Several of Famke Janssen’s former X-Men costars have reprised their roles in the MCU, with Hugh Jackman in  Deadpool & Wolverine,  while Patrick Stewart, James Marsden, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, and Rebecca Romijn will return as Professor X, Cyclops, Magneto, Nightcrawler, and Mystique respectively, in  Avengers: Doomsday.

The actress was one of the names not shown in the epic cast announment of Avengers: Doomsday,  implying that she  would not be returning as Jean. In speaking with Grant Hermanns from ScreenRant, Famke Janssen reflected on her X-Men days, saying, “Those were great films to be part of, and they’ve done so many good things for my career.”

When asked if she would reprise her role as Jean Grey in Avengers: Doomsday, Movieweb reported Famke Janssen saying, “Yeah, to be honest with you, I don’t really know the storyline, so I’m not sure. It’s not my world, it’s never been my world, really, that whole comic book world. I should know by now, I’ve been in it long enough. But I’m really excited to see when it comes out. Just like everyone else, I’ll find out what those storylines are and how it all ended up.”

Is a Famke Janssen Return Even Possible?

In comics, death is about as permanent as a rain shower in April. Jean Grey, in particular, has a reputation for dying and resurrecting so often it’s become a running gag. She’s died, come back, died again, and then came back again, usually with more power and a fresh new costume. It’s part of her charm. The Phoenix Saga, one of the most famous storylines in X-Men history, is literally built on this cycle of death and rebirth. Why should the movies be any different?

So, how could Famke Janssen return? With the MCU diving headfirst into the multiverse, the possibilities are endless. We could see her as a Jean Grey from an alternate timeline, a grizzled veteran hero offering wisdom to a new generation. Or, perhaps more tantalizingly, she could return as the fully realized, all-powerful Phoenix she was always meant to be, untethered from the constraints of the earlier films.

Both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars seem like the perfect playground for this kind of reunion. The original comic storyline was famous for mashing together heroes and villains from across the multiverse. Imagine Janssen’s Phoenix facing off against Dr. Doom or standing alongside Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine one last time. The fan service alone would probably break the box office.

Final Thoughts

Let’s not forget what Famke Janssen brought to the role. For an entire generation, she was Jean Grey. She perfectly captured the character’s kindness, inner turmoil, and terrifying power. In X-Men: The Last Stand her performance as the character gave us a glimpse of the cosmic force lurking beneath the surface, a performance that still holds up. The ball is now in Marvel’s court. Given their recent track record, it feels like a when, not if. And honestly, who wouldn’t want to see it?
