Disney and Marvel seem to be re-energized in 2025. That, or they fear they are seeing the writing on the wall. This is true in theaters, where three movies are set to be released. That includes "The Fantastic Four: First Steps," which feels like a real attempt to create a new, post-Avengers tentpole for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
However, even on the TV side of things, Marvel took a step back in 2024. It feels like they are going all-in on "Daredevil: Born Again." With the show debuting Tuesday, March 4 on Disney+, Marvel released a teaser trailer the day before to make sure people know that, hey, there's a new show for you to watch.
Now, since a new Daredevil series was first put into development, there has been a fair amount of chaos in the production. If not for that, it may have debuted before 2025. All the time, and retooling, has it set up as a real swing for Marvel on the Disney+ front. By and large, the MCU TV shows haven't been well-received, so things may be heading toward "make or break" territory.
This show is a continuation of "Daredevil," keeping Charlie Cox in the role of Matt Murdock and Vincent D'Onofrio as Wilson Fisk, among other cast members that are returning. The original series was actually Netflix's first foray into Marvel shows, back before Disney gobbled up everything Marvel related. That show was also notable for being TV-MA, and part of the delay in "Born Again" debuting was the studio and the creatives trying to land on the right tone for the show. Back in the day, TV-MA content was verboten on Disney+, but that has changed, and "Born Again" is indeed, as trailers have highlighted, for mature audiences.
A show like "Born Again" could give Marvel and Disney a shot at bringing in an audience that has no particular interest in the MCU, either because they never did or because they grew tired of them. Perhaps, like Richard Linklater, they find Marvel's PG-13 film fare inert and overly safe. It's not merely about violence or vulgarity or sex, but about storytelling and visuals that feel gritty and dynamic with more emotional complexity than the MCU can offer.
We shall see. Literally, and soon. After all, Marvel is keen to let us know the first episodes of "Daredevil: Born Again" drop on Disney+ on March 4.
