There’s only one Marvel Cinematic Universe film coming this year, and we’ve finally gotten our first look at it via a lengthy teaser trailer during the Super Bowl. Up until now, we’ve been calling it Deadpool 3, but now it’s got an official name — and the trailer is absolutely perfect.
Marvel Studios released a new trailer for the film now officially titled Deadpool & Wolverine during the Super Bowl, and it’s exactly what you’d expect from the foul-mouthed antihero in red. Ryan Reynolds, who at this point might be more Deadpool than Ryan Reynolds, returns in the new film with the signature charm and wit that made the Deadpool franchise so successful prior to Disney’s purchase of Fox.
The trailer opens on Wade Wilson – Deadpool himself – celebrating his birthday with the whole gang. Dopinder is there, of course, along with Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Colossus, Yukio, Blind Al, Peter, and naturally, Vanessa. Just as he blows out the sole candle on his birthday cake, there’s a knock at the door, and the Time Variance Authority – yes, the one from Loki – drags Wade through the multiverse and into the main MCU.
What follows looks to be a fun little romp through the multiverse, with some very funny references to events both in-universe and in the real world, such as a fight-out in the ruins of a 20th Century Fox sign. An Agent at the TVA tells Wade that he’s special, that he has a chance to be a true hero among heroes. Naturally, he replies in a way that only Deadpool could:
“Your little cinematic universe is about to change forever. I’m the Messiah. I am Marvel Jesus.”
That’s obviously a joke from Deadpool, but he’s not far off the mark, honestly. The MCU has been in a bit of a lull lately, with recent films like The Marvels falling flat. X-Men: First Class director Mathew Vaughn said Deadpool will save the MCU, and judging by what we’ve seen in the trailer, that may just be the case.
The trailer ends with what we’ve known for quite some time: Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine is here, in his signature yellow comic book suit, and will be teaming up with Deadpool… after what looks like a slightly violent reunion.
Deadpool & Wolverine wrapped just a few weeks ago, according to Ryan Reynolds, who in addition to starring in the film also helped pen the story and produce the film. Reynolds previously asked fans to stop spoiling Deadpool 3, after a number of high-profile leaks for the film surfaced on the internet.
Deadpool & Wolverine will hit theaters on July 26, 2024.
