'Five Nights at Freddy's 2' trailer: the animatronics are back and everywhere

The official trailer for Five Nights at Freddy's 2 has arrived, and it previews a horrifying new chapter in the animatronic saga, based on the blockbuster game series by Scott Cawthon.

The first film came out in 2023 and became the highest-grossing horror film of the year, opening to a record-shattering $80 million in October and eventually earning almost $300 million worldwide.

One year has passed since the supernatural nightmare at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. The stories about what transpired there have been twisted into a campy local legend, inspiring the town’s first ever Fazfest.

Former security guard Mike and police officer Vanessa have kept the truth from Mike’s 11-year-old sister, Abby, concerning the fate of her animatronic friends.

But when Abby sneaks out to reconnect with Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy, it will set into motion a terrifying series of events, revealing dark secrets about the true origin of Freddy’s, and unleashing a long-forgotten horror hidden away for decades.

Returning stars include Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Lail, Piper Rubio, Theodus Crane, and Matthew Lillard. As for new cast members, Freddy Carter, Wayne Knight, Mckenna Grace, and Skeet Ulrich join for the sequel.

This will serve as an on-screen reunion for Lillard and Ulrich, which is bound to delight Scream fans.

Emma Tammi is back to direct and executive produce with Cawthon writing the script and producing alongside Blumhouse founder and CEO Jason Blum.

Additional executive producers include Beatriz Sequeira, Christopher Warner, Russell Binder, and Marc Mostman.

As for what fans can expect, Hutcherson expressed to Esquire, "It’s much bigger; the stakes are higher. There’s more animatronics being brought in, different animatronics being brought in, and the world just opens up in a big way. We’re finding the balance right now of building this world and expanding it in a really cool way but also making sure the characters stay really grounded. That’s something that I really think that we all fought for in the first film, because this world that was created in Five Nights at Freddy’s, it’s so out-there. It’s so over-the-top and wacky, in a way, that to find the emotional truth of the characters was gonna be what was gonna work. I think the fans are gonna flip for it. It’s gonna be a lot of fun with the source. It’s gonna be scarier, too, actually."

Five Nights at Freddy's 2 will be released in theaters on December 5.
