Enjoy an entertainment industry catering fully to your nostalgia while you can, Millennials. 2003's "Freaky Friday" was a solid hit for Disney and one of the films that firmly pushed Lindsay Lohan into stardom. Now, 22 years later, Fridays have gotten Freakier.
First of all, "Freakier Friday" is the perfect name for this sequel so no notes there. For those who don't recall, "Freaky Friday" featured Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan as a mother and daughter who swap bodies and then a wacky misadventure ensues. This time around, things are indeed freakier.
The film is operating under the "Jumanji: The Next Level" principle of "Do the same thing, but with more people." There's a four-way body swap going on where Lohan swaps bodies with one of her daughters, while Curtis swaps bodies with Lohan's other daughter, Curtis' granddaughter. One of the daughters is played by Julia Butters, though. Remember her from "Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood?" This is her biggest movie to date.
It's also the biggest film for Lohan in a minute. Her life since "Freaky Friday" has been...colorful. She got things on track enough to star in one of the increasingly-common legacy sequels that are dotting Hollywood.
The trailer for "Freakier Friday" is a bit sweaty in places. There is an "I just peed a little" joke one assumes was fished out of the trash can in the writers' room of a 2011 sitcom. However, there's also some fun to be found, and Curtis is always reliable to give it her all, be it on the screen or campaigning for co-stars to get Oscar nominations.
"Freakier Friday" is in theaters August 8.
