With the finale of Good American Family now streaming, audiences might be wondering if the series is over for good or if the showrunners will find a way to continue since there is more when it comes to the real-life story of Natalia Grace, who is portrayed by Imogen Faith Reid. Well, co-showrunner Katie Robbins has an answer.
"This series ends very specifically where it does … at the end of that trial, when there is empirical, scientific fact [available about] Natalia’s age, and having that not change anything in the court of law. Having that be not admissible in the court of law really lands this horrifying idea — in a show that grapples with horror tropes — that is the most kind of horrifying thing at the end of the day, that that doesn’t matter. That doesn’t change anything," she told TV Insider. "It very specifically ends in the aftermath of that because we really wanted to land that idea, sharply. And it just becomes kind of even more relevant every day, that idea of the ways in which the justice system can be flawed and fail people. So that felt really important. I think that to do an additional story here, there would need to be a reason, something to say with it. And never say never, but that would be the thing: 'Why tell it?'"
As for Mark Duplass, who played Michael, he shared, "What I really want is for the world to recognize the talent of Imogen and for her to get the juggernaut career that she deserves. So whether that takes place in Season 2 where she gets to explore Natalia further, or whether that means [Martin] Scorsese and [Steven] Spielberg come calling with something else, I will take either of those things. That would be lovely."
For those who don't know, abuse allegations have come to light against Cynthia and Antwon Mans since Good American Family was filmed, which they added in for viewers to read at the end, since it was not included in the show.
Robbins explained to Collider, "I think that we had a sense of some of the complications between Natalia and the Mans family at a certain point. We wanted to end the series where we do in a general sense, but we made some adjustments along the way in terms of that story."
The series also stars Ellen Pompeo, Christina Hendricks, and Sarayu Blue. All episodes are now available on Hulu.
