Adam Sandler's movie career was built upon the one-two punch of 1995's "Billy Madison" and 1996's "Happy Gilmore." The former may have been too odd, too sophomoric, for some, but "Happy Gilmore" is a readily-digestible sports comedy. In fact, it's probably one of the most-beloved sports comedies in movie history.
Well, almost 25 years later, it's time for Happy to go back to his happy place.
While the idea of a legacy sequel to "Happy Gilmore" seems a little silly on the surface, the trailer does make it appear like there's something to the story. Gilmore, long retired after an apparently great career, is trying to get back into the game. The trailer even notes that, in real life, golfers drive the ball a lot better than they did in 1996, making Happy's trademark a bit less notable. Clearly a lot of real golfers will be making cameos.
Also returning, perhaps in cameos, perhaps in real roles, are Julie Bowen (as the inexplicably-named Virginia Venit), Christopher McDonald as the iconic Shooter McGavin, and Ben Stiller. Oh, and because it's a Sandler movie his family and also his buddies Allen Covert and Dennis Dugan are in it. Also, this is how we learned about Peter Dante's personal issues. Sadly the late Carl Weathers and Bob Barker will not appear.
"Happy Gilmore 2" will hit Netflix on July 25, 2025 and will assuredly be a huge hit on the streaming service. If it isn't the most-streamed movie on Netflix for, like, a week we'll be surprised.
It could be a big-year for the Sandman'as he is also getting early (we stress early) Oscar buzz for his supporting turn in Noah Baumbach's "Jay Kelly," also out in 2025.
