During a panel at SXSW today, HBO shared the official trailer for season two of The Last of Us, which is based on the video game franchise developed by Naughty Dog.
Five years after the events of the first season, Joel and Ellie are drawn into conflict with each other and a world even more dangerous and unpredictable than the one they left behind.
The series stars Pedro Pascal, Bella Ramsey, Gabriel Luna, Rutina Wesley, Kaitlyn Dever, Isabela Merced, Young Mazino, Ariela Barer, Tati Gabrielle, Spencer Lord, Danny Ramirez, Jeffrey Wright, and Catherine O’Hara.
Pascal and Ramsey opened up about the divide between Joel and Ellie in the new season with Pascal expressing, "While Bella and I are forever joined, to not have them near me for every part of Season 2 felt like a cruel separation. Good for my co-dependent nature, bad for my heart."
Ramsey: "It felt like Ellie maturing and growing up. Me and Pedro were with each other literally through everything all the time the whole [first] season. This season was much more of an isolated one for Ellie. It was a lonelier experience, but I don’t say that in a negative way."
Variety just also exclusively reported that Joe Pantoliano will portray Eugene, "a Part II character who players only hear about in the game when Ellie and her friend Dina find his abandoned cannabis den."
Meanwhile, Dever is joining the cast as Abby Anderson, but it turns out that years before the HBO drama, she actually read for the character of Ellie when Screen Gems was trying to make The Last of Us into a movie.
"We just remained in touch," creator Neil Druckmann revealed to EW. "I believe Craig had the idea of using Kaitlyn for Abby when we talked about season 2. The reason we cast Kaitlyn is because she’s an incredible actor. You look at her body of work and the way she throws herself at that stuff… We value performance over anything else."
The new season will be a total of 7 episodes and premieres on Sunday, April 13 at 9 PM ET/PT on HBO. Additionally, it will be available to stream on Max.
