In a thrilling 1m 26s trailer, HBO may have just revived a thirst for “Harry Potter” and the magic of the wizarding world. Since the announcement of the show’s release, coming to HBO Max streaming on Christmas Day 2026, many have been quibbling over whether or not the show will be worth sitting down to watch. The snippet shared on April 2, 2026, may have just clinched an even bigger audience than the movies managed to snag.

In the behind the scenes trailer, HBO Max released, it starts with incredibly uplifting and inspirational music. The very first vision we encounter as the music rises up is a cameraman shooting the scene of Hagrid leading students in what appears to be the forest. True to the books, Hagrid is bigger than life as he towers over the youths following behind with lanterns in hand.
John Lithgow, slated to portray Albus Dumbledore, headmaster of Hogwarts, is captured sitting before a blank screen. He begins by remarking how the stories are an extraordinary phenomenon. In between snapping back to Lithgow, he narrates while the children are seen walking through a large doorway into Hogwarts Castle, into the Great Hall. All the while, really bringing home that this isn’t just cinematography, it’s reconstructing a new canon of Harry Potter being brought to a whole new generation.
We see Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, the boy who lived, looking with wonder and amazement as he approaches platform 9 and ¾. This behind-the-scenes look is being presented on April 5, 2026, on HBO Max. It will give viewers a look behind the proverbial curtain, a chance to see all the things that we assume are happening but have never gotten the chance to really see as it happens.
This is where Mara LePere-Schloop shines. She is a member of the Production Designers Collective (PDC), and her job is crafting the scenes and buildings we will see in the show. We get to see as they build, with her voice coming through alongside it. For her, being able to build on such a large scale, she says it is a designer’s dream. The goal with the large platform is to build on and bring to life childhood joy, a sense of playfulness that we imagine a child who can do magic would experience.
The Guardian sums up what a lot of people are thinking. HBO will be revealing more magic to a much wider audience, offering production footage behind the making of the first season of “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.” They got an inside scoop that wasn’t in the trailer, one that will have many excited. Nick Frost, who plays Hagrid, will be narrating the special. While hearing Lithgow and Paapa Essiedu, who will be filling in the snazzy wizard robes of Professor Snape, talk about how they get to see everything coming to life, the idea of the friendly giant narrating just feels a bit special.
It is said that it will give Potter-heads a look at just how big the show is going to be and the care being put into its production to bring a sense of nostalgia and enthusiasm. With interviews with the cast, production, and costume design, down to the creatures in the series. There will be a lot to look forward to on April 5, 2026. The Guardian even mentions the process it took to find the 3 new stars who will strive to capture the world’s heart through the epic tale, and the whole team’s commitment to detail.

While looking for more details on the trailer, IGN highlights something many may have missed. Aside from seeing the Great Hall for the series, we will get a peek at Snape’s dimly lit and cold classroom. Most bewildering of all is the animatronic owl. In a world filled with CGI that might break immersion, the team making the series went back to basics, as we see an owl being programmed.
What may make this a true winner for fans of the series is the fact that, through reading between the lines of Lithgow’s commentary, we will get scenes that have been referenced but never seen. Considering the books make references to things but everything is from Harry’s view, IGN had reported previously that there are fans who saw Lithgow alongside Perenelle Flamel, wife of the famed Philosopher and Alchemist, Nicolas Flamel, the creator of the Philosopher’s Stone.
It would seem HBO Max’s “Finding Harry: The Craft Behind The Magic” is meant to definitively answer people’s skepticism regarding this retelling of the story of Harry Potter. With the short snippet they gave us, combined with fan sightings, it feels like the HBO Max series will hold a level of reverence for the books and behind-the-scenes magic that has never seen the light of day until now. If they manage to deliver on their promise, it might be the Christmas Gift everyone is waiting for come Dec. 25, 2026.
