In the wake of celebrating 50 seasons, changes are underway at 'Saturday Night Live.' Cast turnover is nothing new for 'SNL,' it’s built into the show’s DNA. Recently, a few lower-profile cast members announced their departures. Now, though, Heidi Gardner, a core member of the ensemble for several years, has confirmed she is moving on.
During her eight-season run on 'Saturday Night Live,' Gardner became known for characters like the recurring Weekend Update guest Angel, Every Boxer’s Girlfriend, and her impressions of figures ranging from Kristen Schaal to Melania Trump. Away from the sketch show, she has appeared in series such as Apple TV+’s 'Shrinking' and had supporting roles in films including 'Life of the Party' and 'Hustle,' while also lending her voice to animated projects like 'SuperMansion' and 'Mike Tyson Mysteries.'
Gardner’s exit from 'Saturday Night Live' fits more in line with the show’s history of cast turnover. Gardner eight season run with the series is a strong run by any measure, but unless you’re in Kenan Thompson territory, there eventually comes a time to step away. Were she considered one of the all-time greats in the mold of Kristen Wiig or Bill Hader, her departure might have come with more fanfare. Instead, it arrived as a between-seasons news drop — notable, if understated. Her next move will be one to watch.
The question remains whether more changes are coming. In addition to Gardner, Michael Longfellow, Emil Wakim, and Devon Walker have announced their departure. 'Saturday Night Live' season 51 starts October 4, so there's still time for additional comings and goings.
