Here's your first look at Ryan Gosling's 'Star Wars: Starfighter'

Disney and Lucasfilm slammed the brakes on 'Star Wars' movies (and even the TV side) after oversaturating the galaxy. Both 'Solo' and 'The Rise of Skywalker' underwhelmed, and the franchise basically went on ice. But the engines are powering back up. The 'Mandalorian' movie hits theaters in 2026, marking the first big-screen trip since 'Skywalker.'

Then, in 2027, comes 'Star Wars: Starfighter.' That project has been floating in the ether for a while, but now it’s starting to feel real. Case in point: we just got our first look at 'Starfighter.'

Yeah, it’s just one black-and-white photo. But it’s also the first glimpse of a brand-new, original 'Star Wars' movie. That alone is enough to send fans into orbit. Plot? Characters? Nothing. All Lucasfilm has said is that 'Star Wars: Starfighter' will be “an entirely original story set in a period of time never before explored in 'Star Wars.'”

What we do know: Ryan Gosling is front and center, joined in that first-look photo by young newcomer Flynn Gray, who, for now, is notable simply because he’s standing next to Gosling. The real headline-grabber is Amy Adams. She needs no introduction, and her casting signals that Lucasfilm is aiming for something prestige-level with this one.

Gosling, Adams and the rest of the cast aside, the big caveat here is behind the camera. Shawn Levy is directing, and his track record is farily uneven. He’s the kind of filmmaker who usually delivers exactly what’s on the page, which has given us everything from 'Night at the Museum' to 'Date Night' to 'Deadpool & Wolverine.' The script comes from Jonathan Tropper, and that pairing hasn’t exactly inspired confidence before as they teamed up on 'This Is Where I Leave You' and 'The Adam Project,' both of which landed with a thud.

Maybe Lucasfilm’s notoriously heavy hand in production will keep things on course, unlike what seemed to happen with 'Solo.' But if Levy and Tropper are left to steer the ship unchecked, 'Starfighter' could make 'Solo' look like 'The Empire Strikes Back.'
