Drew Scott got candid with fans about his past parenting mistakes.
“I don’t know who needs to hear this, but if you run a mile a minute, which I tend to, I think you might relate to this story,” the Property Brothers star began a Tuesday, June 23, Instagram video. “I came home one day, and I saw [my son] Parker. And I’m like, ‘Hey, Parker. Give me a hug.’ And he sort of ran away. And then, he went and picked up one of his toys and held it to his ear, and he actually started walking around, going, ‘I’m on a business call. I’m on a business call.’”
Scott called the moment “heartbreaking” because his kids see him on business calls all the time. “That was a wake-up for me to not be on my phone when I’m around the kids, show them that I’m actually present,” he stated. “I’m listening to their questions, I’m answering, I’m playing with them. For me, the balance with family is very important.” (Scott shares his son, Parker, and daughter, Piper, with his wife, Linda Phan.)
Scott noted that he prioritizes his family by stopping by his house during lunch breaks while filming his HGTV shows. “For example, just a couple of days ago, Piper has a music class at home. So, it’s her and six other babies and toddlers that come over and a music teacher, and they just play music,” he explained. “It’s a small thing, but for me to be present there, I can see it in Piper’s face. She gets excited, and for me, it’s heartwarming and I love it. But if I was just to be at my busy, busy pace, I would do calls over my lunch and I would skip that. Then, all of a sudden, I would look back years from now and think, ‘I missed these crucial points in my baby’s life.’”

Scott concluded the clip by offering some helpful advice to his followers. “Establish what your priorities are. Even if you don’t have kids, maybe it’s nice to spend a bit more time with your parents. Maybe it’s nice to spend some time with your siblings or your best friends,” he stated. “It’s gonna feel pretty empty at the end of your career or at the end of your life if you look back and all you did was work. And don’t be that person checking their phone when you’re hanging out with family.”
Fans shared their appreciation for Scott’s candid confession and their similar experiences in the post’s comments. “I worked from home and would frequently have to say, ‘in just a minute’ when my kids called me for something. As they got older, I would ask them to do something, and they would respond, ‘in just a minute.’ It was a wake up call,” one user commented. “Focused attention, even for a short time, makes all the difference.”
Another added, “We’re retired now but decided years ago we had the choice for me to stay home with the kids when they were little, forgo the vacations, big house, new car etc but don’t regret a minute of it.” Someone else shared, “Thank you for sharing. These are important things to remember. I’m glad you are doing it now, and not later. ‘We’ll do that later’ is a mentality that can come back to haunt us. I am learning, now-today, is the most important time.”
Drew shared his parenting wake-up call just a few days after celebrating his dad, Jim Scott, on Father’s Day. “Best Father’s Day from both ends. Showing some Scottish pride with my dad. And Parker did all the house work,” he captioned Instagram photos on Monday, June 22, of Jim sporting a Scotland soccer jersey and Parker sweeping the floor.
