Hilarious 'Patriotic' needle drop in 'Fallout' was absolutely perfect
xander harkness during star spangled banner needle drop in fallout season 2 Prime Video

The great thing about Falloutwhich takes place in a dangerous dystopian world where the rich destroyed the planet in the name of money and power at the expense of everyone else—is that it’s nothing like the real world. Nothing at all. Not…not even a little bit. So when a character says, “All that remains of America is the overwhelming evidence of its failure,” we can all rest easy knowing he is only talking about the fictional America of Fallout. Not ours. Again. Our America is doing great. Really, really great. That’s also why the show’s absurd, hilarious, patriotic needle drop in season two’s third episode definitely wasn’t any sort of commentary on the actual United States of 2025. Nope, playing “The Star-Spangled Banner” on Fallout has nothing to do with reality.

Because there’s no way to think that a bloodthirsty fascist idiot in a giant suit of armor fighting a robot with a rocket-fueled warhammer, all set to the United States’ national anthem, is any sort of commentary on our great nation.

Kumail Nanjiani’s Xander tried to win over Maximus by appealing to him as a fellow warrior. Xander said the Commonwealth chapter of the Brotherhood isn’t run by its Clerics. It’s run by members like them, the ones who go out and risk their lives. He then found some “unauthorized automated activity” out in the desert. Maximus didn’t care about some random robots, but Xander said “this is what we do.” The Brotherhood of Steel keeps the wasteland safe…from random robots. Who aren’t bothering anyone. And you need to fight them with rocket-powered hammers.

Fallout has shown repeatedly that, despite Quintus’ lofty goals about saving humanity, the Brotherhood of Steel consists primarily of unprincipled idiots. It’s a bunch of overgrown children with cool mech suits that like to punch things. They don’t care about civilization or even preserving technology for mankind’s benefit. The only thing they care about is as simple as, “This is so f------ cool.” And when Xander set off to fight the robot, he fully embraced that meathead mentality.

And the fact that Fallout dropped “The Star-Spangled Banner” during Xander’s ludicrous, hilarious attack made it all the more perfect. What could be more worthy of the American anthem than a power-hungry dumba-- who talks and acts like an 11-year-old boy destroying something in the most wasteful way possible?

The America of Fallout, we mean. Definitely only the America of Fallout. No real American would ever do that.

They’d listen to “Free Bird” instead.

Fallout season two releases new episodes Wednesdays on Prime Video.
