How Cyndi Lauper made pro wrestling what it is today

How Cyndi Lauper made pro wrestling what it is today

Recording industry legend Cyndi Lauper, who turns 65 on June 22, has racked up a dazzling array of accomplishments throughout her 30-plus year career. She’s got stacks of platinum records, a trophy room’s worth of artistic awards spanning multiple mediums (just an Oscar shy of an EGOT) and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. But for music fans of a certain age, it’s impossible to recall Lauper’s meteoric rise to stardom without marveling over her most unusual and unsung achievement: she made professional wrestling what it is today.

What would eventually be known as the “Rock ‘n’ Wrestling Connection” kicked off with a cameo by outsized WWF personality Captain Lou Albano in the music video for Lauper’s debut single, “Girls Just Want to Have Fun.” The hirsute Albano played Lauper’s disapproving father, whom Lauper affectionately hammerlocks into their apartment wall. With Albano now instantly recognizable to millions of Gen X-ers, Lauper’s manager, Dave Wolff (a pro wrestling fanatic), arranged for his client to appear on Rowdy Roddy Piper’s ringside talk show “Piper’s Pit.”

For an artist who’d just scored her first Billboard smash with a song about female empowerment, going on “Piper’s Pit” was like Helen Reddy victory lapping “I Am Woman” with a live set at the National Tractor Pulling Championships. Piper played a narcissistic boor notorious for ending his “interviews” by physically assaulting his guests. Subjecting the lovably perky Lauper to this meathead milieu felt remarkably ill-advised. At best, no one would notice; at worst, her fun-loving feminist image would take a hit.

Lauper, however, was completely game for “Piper’s Pit,” fully committing to a manufactured tiff with Albano, who’d bragged to Piper that he not only discovered her, but also wrote the lyrics to “Time After Time.” When Albano veered into sexist insults, an indignant Lauper leapt to her feet and bashed him over the head with her purse. It was brilliantly silly theater sold by a trio of first-rate performers. The crowd went nuts, and a wrestling feud was born.

The dispute would be settled at “The Brawl to End It All,” a women’s wrestling match where Lauper’s “rock-and-roll” champion Wendi Richter battled Albano’s nefarious associate The Fabulous Moolah. MTV relentlessly promoted the fracas, airing it live on July 23, 1984, and ringing up a then network-best 9.0 Nielsen rating. Richter’s win could’ve served as a tidy conclusion to the spat, but MTV and WWF were eager to top that eye-popping ratings number. What happened next put wrestling on the path to becoming the $700 million a year revenue producer it is today.

On Dec. 28, 1984, Lauper attended a highly publicized WWF card at Madison Square Garden to bury the hatchet with Albano by presenting him with an honorary gold record for his very real multiple sclerosis fundraising efforts. Piper crashed the ceremony, smashed the award over Albano’s head, power-slammed Wolff and kicked Lauper in the head. It was a jaw-dropping turn of events. Just when it looked like no one could stop Piper, the WWF’s recently crowned World Champion and newfangled golden boy Hulk Hogan stormed the ring and saved the day.

This villainous act set up “The War to Settle the Score,” another MTV/WWF co-production that attracted major '80s celebrities like Tina Turner, Dee Snider and Kenny Loggins. There were multiple matches on the Feb. 18, 1985 card, including Lauper’s champion Richter defending her title against Moolah’s new protégé, Leilani Kai. But what was promoted as an evening of squared-circle catharsis went unexpectedly sideways for the Rock ‘n’ Wrestling Connection: Hogan “won” by disqualification after being assaulted by Piper, Bob Orton and Paul Orndorff (this time, Mr. T raced to Hogan’s rescue), while Lauper watched on forlornly as Richter was defeated by Kai.

It was wrestling’s “The Empire Strikes Back,” the difference being that millions of wrestling fans wouldn’t have to wait three years for the payoff because Vince McMahon already had it booked for March 31, 1985. He called it WrestleMania.

In 2004, the rechristened World Wrestling Entertainment added a “celebrity wing” to its Hall of Fame. Fourteen years later, Lauper has yet to be inducted to an institution that likely wouldn’t exist had she never paid a visit to “Piper’s Pit.”

Steelers' Aaron Rodgers Has Been In Communication With Exciting All-Pro Wide Receiver That Could Join Pittsburgh

The Pittsburgh Steelers have a very exciting team on paper heading into the 2025 NFL season as the organization has made plenty of changes throughout the offseason. It can be argued that both sides of the ball have been upgraded in some way, and the rookie class provides some excitement as well. One spot fans might want to see another move made is at wide receiver, as outside of DK Metcalf, there are some question marks in the room. Calvin Austin III took a strong step forward in 2024, but he has missed a large chunk of time during training camp this month due to injury, and Roman Wilson is still making strides. There are some interesting veterans that are still available in free agency, and some more names should hit the open market at the end of August when teams cut down to their 53-man rosters. However, one of the interesting names on the market currently is former superstar wide receiver, Odell Beckham Jr. Beckham was a standout during his time with the New York Giants and Cleveland Browns, and he won a Super Bowl with the Los Angeles Rams. He recently joined Bill Maher on the Club Random podcast, and he shared that he has had conversations with quarterback Aaron Rodgers. "Love him, love him," Beckham said of Rodgers. "We've had conversations. I won't say that, that it's not a possibility [joining the Steelers], and I won't say that I haven't had any communication. I f*cking love [Mike] Tomlin. I was actually supposed to be drafted to the Steelers. That was the meeting that I had where I was like, 'I think I'm going to the Steelers.' Giants ended up taking me at 12, Steelers had I think the 16th pick maybe. I think they took Ryan Shazier." Beckham revealed that he has had some conversations with the Pittsburgh quarterback, which could mean the two sides are interested in joining forces with the Steelers. The veteran wide receiver didn't sound too optimistic that anything would happen, but he did not shut down the idea of wearing black and gold during the 2025 season. Beckham has been trying to find his footing in the league ever since he tore his ACL during Super Bowl LVI. The injury caused him to miss the entire 2022 season, and he has since played for the Baltimore Ravens and Miami Dolphins. In the past two seasons, the receiver has caught just 44 passes for 620 yards and three touchdowns. There is no doubting that Beckham has lost a step, but he would certainly be an interesting addition for the Steelers. Some argue that Pittsburgh's wide receiver room is full of too many wide receiver threes and fours, rather than having a solid second option at the position. At this point in his career, Beckham would likely just add to that problem, rather than being a solution. Steelers Were Interested In Beckham During 2014 NFL Draft Beckham also stated during his interview with Maher that the Steelers were very interested in him during the 2014 NFL Draft. He was selected by the Giants with the 12th overall pick, and Pittsburgh selected at 15. The Steelers grabbed Ryan Shazier, but Beckham seemed fairly confident that if he had still been on the board, he would have gone to the Steelers with the 15th pick. This is a bit hard to believe, as the Steelers have not drafted a wide receiver in the first round since the 2006 NFL Draft when the organization selected Santonio Holmes. The wide receiver room was looking a little thin heading into the 2014 season, but the Steelers were able to make it work after picking Martavis Bryant in the fourth round of the same draft.

Jordan Love's thumb surgery comes at inopportune time for Packers

The Green Bay Packers have a cause for concern with Jordan Love in the preseason. The quarterback suffered a thumb injury during the Packers' 30-10 loss to the New York Jets on Saturday. Love went 1-of-5 passing for seven yards and took a sack for -3 yards in the defeat. Both of his drives ended in punts. Per Matt Schneidman of The Athletic, Love is set to have surgery on his thumb after seeing how it held up at practice on Monday. General manager Brian Gutekunst believes Love will be ready for Week 1 against the Detroit Lions. "Gutekunst sounded adamant that Love will be ready for Week 1 against the Lions," Schneidman wrote. "Hit his left hand on a helmet on that half-scramble vs. Jets. Wanted to see how it felt at practice yesterday and decided to get it fixed to avoid future issues. Will be with team in Indianapolis. "Brian Gutekunst says Jordan Love is having a procedure done on his left thumb. It’s a 'ligament thing.' Hurt it in the preseason opener. Gutekunst hopes he returns to practice next week." The injury comes at an inopportune time for the Packers. Love and the majority of his receivers have not been in sync during training camp and in the preseason game. Like last season, Packers' receivers have dropped passes during practices and did so in the preseason opener against the Jets. Green Bay needs Love on the field, gaining chemistry with his pass-catching targets, including first-round pick Matthew Golden, before it plays the Lions.

Notre Dame believed to be trending toward surprise choice at quarterback

The quarterback battle for Notre Dame is set to come to an end shortly, and it might be a surprise considering how the national media predicted the race to finish. Per Eric Hansen of On3, head coach Marcus Freeman is set to name the starting quarterback by Sunday when he meets the media. The Irish are still letting the quarterback battle play out until then, but it appears sophomore quarterback Kenny Minchey is the favorite to start at Hard Rock Stadium against the Miami Hurricanes on Aug. 31. Minchey has shown improvement in numerous areas throughout camp, and he has the edge on freshman quarterback CJ Carr in what is believed to be the final week of the competition. "As of Wednesday, the line between 1 and 2 remained blurred," Hansen wrote. "The tiebreaker may eventually go to Minchey, per the source, because of his ability to be a true running threat and offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock’s preference to have that element to put pressure on opposing defenses. "But he also has a preference for QBs who can transcend adversity, and the training camp phase was choreographed to test precisely that. While both contenders responded persistently in a manner that defies their inexperience, Minchey has been exceptional in that regard." Throughout the summer, ESPN writers such as Bill Connelly and Mark Schlabach have written as though it were a forgone conclusion that Carr would win the battle in training camp. However, Minchey appears to be a natural fit for how offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock likes to scheme against a defense. He helped dual-threat Jayden Daniels earn a Heisman Trophy in 2023 and took Notre Dame to a national championship appearance with Riley Leonard. The battle isn't over, but the edge appears to be running Minchey's way.

Bills turn focus to Super Bowl pursuit by ending James Cook contract saga

As soon as it was confirmed on Tuesday that Buffalo Bills running back James Cook planned to resume practicing because things had "changed" regarding his desire for a contract extension, it seemed to be a matter of when and not if fans would learn that the two sides had come to terms on an agreement. It turns out Cook had millions of reasons to suit up on Aug. 12. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Wednesday morning that Cook has received a four-year, $48M contract extension that includes $30M guaranteed from the Bills. According to Alaina Getzenberg of ESPN, the $30M guarantee is the most handed to a running back over the past five years. Cook was in the final year of his rookie deal and stopped participating in training-camp practices as part of a hold-in earlier in August. However, his agent later insisted that the 25-year-old "only wants to be a Buffalo Bill" and would continue "working toward" a resolution through the preseason. Last week, Buffalo quarterback and reigning regular-season Most Valuable Player Josh Allen directly said that he "desperately" wanted to have Cook back on the practice field and in the lineup. That's understandable considering what's expected of the 2025 Bills. As of Wednesday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook continued to list the Bills and Baltimore Ravens as the co-favorites at +600 betting odds to win Super Bowl LX this coming February. Meanwhile, Cook was responsible for the ninth-most regular-season rushing yards (2,131) in the league over the past two campaigns. He, Ravens star Derrick Henry and Jahmyr Gibbs of the Detroit Lions led the NFL with 16 rushing touchdowns each last season. In the end, trading Cook for a future draft asset never made much sense for a Bills team that is looking to do more than simply qualify for the next postseason tournament. "James could only envision himself as a Buffalo Bill," agent Zac Hiller told Schefter. "We are extremely thankful to the entire Bills organization and glad we could make that happen." With the Cook saga now behind them, the Bills can fully focus on preparing for their Week 1 "Sunday Night Football" showdown with the Ravens that will take place at Buffalo's Highmark Stadium on Sept. 7.
