Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair is nearly here, and as we await the arrival of Disney’s revival run of Malcolm in the Middle, we can’t help but reflect on how the original series ended.

Airing from 2000 to 2006 on Fox, Malcolm in the Middle was a family sitcom that aired for seven seasons before concluding on May 14, 2006, wrapping a 151-episode run. The show chronicled the day-to-day life of Malcolm (Frankie Muniz) and his working-class family as they dealt with various trials and tribulations. The catch is that Malcolm is a child prodigy, which gives him a unique perspective on his family, including his parents, Lois (Jane Kaczmarek) and Hal (Bryan Cranston), as well as his brothers, Reece (Justin Berfield), Dewey (Erik Per Sullivan), and Francis (Christopher Masterson).

By the end of the series, the family had grown with the addition of the youngest brother, Jamie (James and Lukas Rodriguez), with the finale revealing another pregnancy for Lois and Hal, bringing the family’s size to six kids. In the episode “Graduation,” Malcolm faces his future as he prepares for high school graduation.

Having been accepted to Harvard University, Malcolm crunches numbers with his parents to try to make it happen, but he’s momentarily seduced by the idea of accepting a high-paying job straight out of school. Lois stops Malcolm from accepting the offer, though, and he’s furious over it.

As the family packs into their van for graduation, with Lois, Hal, Malcolm, Reece, Dewey, Francis, and his wife Piama (Emy Coligado), grandma Ida (Cloris Leachman), and baby Jamie, a barrel Reece planted in the trunk exploded, shattering his plan for a graduation prank, and covering his family in waste.

As they hose off in the yard, Lois and Malcolm have it out, with her telling Malcolm that he has to go to school and take the path of most resistance because he’s their hope. Ultimately, she tells him that he’s going to be president one day, and it’s because of his experiences that he’ll look out for working-class people like them.

The family agrees with this sentiment, which is a surprise to Malcolm, but he doesn’t deny their aspirations for him. As the finale wrapped up, it was revealed that the eldest son and family wild child, Francis, had gotten a stable day job that he loved and was embarking on a domestic chapter with Piama.

Meanwhile, Reese took a janitorial job at his former school and moved in with Lois’s coworker Craig (David Anthony Higgins). Dewey enjoyed his newfound role as the eldest brother at home as he and Jamie remained with Lois and Hal. And Malcolm ended up at Harvard, working as a janitor, and no doubt taking on other gigs to cover his education.

Whether or not he’ll make his family’s presidential dream come true remains to be seen, but don’t miss Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair when it premieres, especially now that you’re all caught up on how the original series ended.
