The DC movie landscape is getting revamped, again, under the auspices of James Gunn. A Marvel defector, Gunn's first big swing is the upcoming Superman movie. "Entertainment Weekly" has a massive, and we do mean massive, look ahead at "Superman," but you already know that movie is coming out. However, buried within this look at "Superman" there was a notable note from Gunn related to another DC superhero: Wonder Woman.
Gunn confirmed that a Wonder Woman movie is "being written right now." There was also a brief update on the planned HBO series about the Amazons and their secreted away home island of Themyscira, noting the project is "slow moving, but it's moving." That feels both encouraging and discouraging, and it doesn't feel out of the realm of possibility the HBO show never comes to fruition. A Wonder Woman movie, though, definitely seems in the offing now.
Under the old DC movie umbrella, Patty Jenkins' 2017 "Wonder Woman" was probably the biggest success story, as it landed both commercially and critically. We weren't as high on it as many, mostly because the reveal on the villain is very silly, but in the big picture, it succeeded. Then "Wonder Woman 1984" careened off track, owing to the unfortunate fact it got stuck as a 2020 release and the entirely-avoidable fact that it isn't that good.
Wonder Woman will be returning, but also, like Superman, will be rebooted. Gal Gadot will not be returning to the role, which has not been cast at this point. Gunn is also still in need to cast his DC landscape's Batman, but he was quick to note Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson are still being allowed to do their own Batman thing off on their own. In Gunn's world, though, we'll be getting that Lasso of Truth and invisible plane in time.
