James Gunn on 'Peacemaker' Season 2: 'There's a really good chance of that'

Peacemaker's first season hit HBO Max on Jan. 13 and still has three more episodes to go, but creator James Gunn feels pretty confident that the story won't end there.

"There's a pretty good chance of that," said Gunn when asked if the spin-off series will get a second season on Deadline's "Hero Nation" podcast. "We're the biggest show in the world right now, so the show is doing extraordinarily well, and we're excited. We all love doing it. We just have to cross some t's and dot some i's, which is basically me."

A direct spin-off of Gunn's The Suicide Squad film, Peacemaker stars John Cena as the titular DC vigilante, also known as Christopher Smith, as well as Steve Agee, Danielle Brooks, Jennifer Holland, Chukwudi Iwuji, Robert Patrick and Freddie Stroma.

Gunn shared that he wrote Peacemaker during the thick of COVID quarantine:

"I was editing The Suicide Squad, and I was mostly done with editing The Suicide Squad, so I was starting to get bored because I was locked down. I was depressed, frankly. I was having heavy anxiety, like a lot of us probably were at that time and maybe still today. I just needed something to take care of myself, and that's really where the show comes from. I mean, I did want to make a big TV series, but it really did come from the place of I needed something to soothe myself while I was having anxiety, and so I started writing a TV show."

Additionally, Gunn teased that he is "working on another TV show that is connected" to The Suicide Squad universe that he couldn't divulge much of anything about — other than, "It will not be the same genre, really, as Peacemaker — it won't be as much of a comedy as Peacemaker is — but it'll be in the same universe."
