James Gunn talks about the fate of Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn and which member of 'The Suicide Squad' he wants to bring back

James Gunn, co-head of DC Studios along with Peter Safran, is opening up about whether fans can expect to see Margot Robbie reprise her role as Harley Quinn, who she played in 2016's Suicide Squad, 2020's Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn, and 2021's The Suicide Squad

"That will be revealed down the line," he told Entertainment Weekly, when asked if the actress would eventually return for his DC Universe or if there would be a new Harley Quinn. With how beloved Robbie's take on the fan-favorite character is, it would definitely be a difficult task to recast.

However, Gunn did reveal which other member of the Suicide Squad he would like to bring back. "I definitely am always looking for a place to put Bloodsport and figuring that out," he explained, referring to Idris Elba's role. "So we'll see what happens."

For now, DC fans can enjoy the second season of Peacemaker, which is set to premiere on August 21 on HBO Max. The series stars John Cena, Danielle Brooks, Jennifer Holland, Freddie Stroma, Steve Agee, Robert Patrick, Frank Grillo, David Denman, Sol Rodriguez, and Tim Meadows.

Gunn serves as an executive producer and wrote all eight episodes, directing three of them. Peacemaker will have strong ties to Superman, which is currently in theaters and will be available on digital starting Friday.

"It’s a big part, definitely Superman leads directly into Peacemaker," he shared with The Hollywood Reporter. "It should be noted that this is for adults, not for children, but Superman leads into this show and then we have the setting up of all of the rest of the DCU in this season of Peacemaker, it’s incredibly important."

He also previewed that season 2 will have "Lots of guest stars coming up, lots of characters that are showing up that we’ve already met in Superman."
