James Marsden is sharing his thoughts on whether Allie Hamilton should have picked Noah Calhoun over his The Notebook character, Lon Hammond. The film came out in 2004 and is still beloved by audiences today. In addition to Marsden, the leads include Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling
"You know, it's funny. I hear a lot of people nowadays that very kindly come up to me and say, '[Lon was] the whole package, you were like this wealthy guy, and you treated her right, and you trusted her and it was a healthy relationship and [Allie and Noah] were in an unhealthy, toxic relationship,'" the actor told PEOPLE. "While I see that and understand it, I mean, love is love."
He continued to express, "The dynamic between [Allie and Noah] and their chemistry was undeniable. And so I think, yeah, she should have ended up with Noah. That kind of love in that movie can be fiery and it can still be the right thing, the right person to be with."
As for where his character is today, he commented, "Not that Lon is a bad guy, he’s a really good guy! But there’s another lady out there for him, I’m sure, that’s very happy."
Last year, the movie turned 20, and while reflecting on the story's legacy, director Nick Cassavetes said to EW, "Ryan and Rachel have gone on to great careers; they're completely different people than the kids that they were. Mom's got Alzheimer's, [Garner]'s dead, [Shepard]'s dead. It's a different time period now. We probably all made beautiful films that didn't do very well over the years, but this one caught the zeitgeist, and it's a beautiful memory, and I'm happy that people enjoy it. I'm happy that it's out there."
The Notebook was adapted from Nicholas Sparks' 1996 novel of the same title.
