"Tron" is the Disney series that certainly tries to live by the credo, "Always late but worth the wait." The first film, an oh-so-'80s, computer-centric action movie, was an early starring role for Jeff Bridges. It became sort of cult-y, and so then, in 2010, a sequel arrived. Fittingly, it was called "Tron: Legacy." It was really betting on Garrett Hedlund being a movie star.
Now, once more, years later, Disney is going for it again with "Tron: Ares." The film has its first trailer, which you can watch right here:
This time around, the script is flipped. Instead of "What if people went into computers?" the conceit is "What if a computer went into the real world." Well, more or less. Ares is something of an A.I. entity (tres chic in 2025) that has been brought into the human realm on a mission of some sort.
Also this time, instead of trying to mint a movie star, Disney is trying to reclaim a movie star. Jared Leto is starring as Ares, with Evan Peters and Greta Lee among those rounding out the cast. And, of course, Bridges will be back as Kevin Flynn. After all, what would a "Tron" movie be without Kevin Flynn? Also, what is a "Tron" movie with Kevin Flynn? Like, what is a "Tron" movie? Is there any cultural sense of this whole thing as a built-world franchise?
Well, the trailer seems pretty alright if you are into this sort of thing. At least the concept is reasonably fresh as well. "Tron: Ares" arrives October 10, and it does have a score by Nine Inch Nails.
