It feels like Jason Momoa has been angling to play the DCU’s Lobo for longer than the DCU even existed. Just kidding, but only just. We first heard talk about Jason Momoa abandoning Aquaman for Lobo as far back as January 2023. And James Gunn only officially took over the DCU in late 2022. That’s getting in on the ground floor. In March of this year, it was finally confirmed that Jason Momoa’s Lobo WOULD arrive in the DCU, and he’d make his first appearance in the movie Supergirl. And, indeed, with the release of Supergirl‘s first trailer, we also get our very first look at Jason Momoa as the DCU’s Lobo. You can check him out below.
Well, our first image of Jason Momoa’s Lobo in the DCU Supergirl trailer looks as good as we thought it might, even though it’s still a bit blurry. After all, Jason Momoa was basically born to play Lobo. The resemblance between the two is uncanny.

For those who don’t know, the muscled Lobo is an alien bounty hunter in DC’s world. He has long black hair and glowing red eyes, and yeah, he looks like Jason Momoa. Additionally, Lobo’s irreverence, might, and anti-hero tendencies will mesh well with Momoa’s acting talents. Lobo made his comic debut in the 1980s in The Omega Men by writer/artist Keith Giffen’s, then got an update in Justice League International which kicked off in 1987. Lobo really took off in the ’90s… And now, he’s going to take off again as Jason Momoa brings Lobo to life on the big screen in Supergirl.
Fresh off playing Aquaman in DC’s last cinematic universe, Jason Momoa will find one similarity between Arthur Curry and Lobo in the DCU. Lobo really loves his space dolphins. Space dolphins, which we EXPECT to see in Supergirl. You can learn more about Lobo with our full explainer here.
Honestly, Jason Momoa getting cast as Lobo in the DCU shows that tenacity counts. A while back, James Gunn revealed that Momoa texted him about Lobo literally on the day he took over the DCU. Gunn shared in March, “On the anniversary of Lobo, I can’t help but think of a text I received from Jason Momoa on the morning it was announced Peter & I were the heads of DC Studios — the day Jason & I first discussed him joining the DCU as Lobo. I’ve loved watching Jason bring him to life & can’t wait to share that with all of you.”
Meanwhile, Momoa shared that Lobo had always been his favorite and he’s collected all his comics forever. Hey, dreams do come true. We know this means Jason Momoa will bring an insane amount of effort to playing Lobo in Supergirl.
We only get a blink and you miss it look at Jason Momoa’s Lobo in the DCU Supergirl trailer. And we can’t wait to see more of and get to know the character better. We hope he’ll also return to us in other upcoming DCU projects. In the meantime, throwback to our earliest conversations about Jason Momoa showing up as Lobo in the DCU with our video here.
