Yeesh. It may be the end of March, but in a bleak landscape for the domestic box office the king of "Dumpuary," Jason Statham, has scored a coup. Even though "Snow White" delivered below expectations in its opening weekend, few, if anybody, believed it would fall from the top spot this weekend. Then, Statham showed up and flipped the script.
"A Working Man" is that junk food cinema that Statham delivers time and time again. It's a mindless thriller that might as well be a sequel to "The Beekeeper" even if it isn't. Clearly, the British actor has carved out his cinematic space, as "A Working Man" won the domestic box office with $15.2 million. That's not great, but it still won, because "Snow White" dropped off in a major way. It brought in $14.2 million, a whopping 66-percent drop from last weekend. Having brought in $143.1 million worldwide, "Snow White" is going to need real legs to not cost Disney money.
We come here not to bury "Snow White," though, but to praise "A Working Man." The movie landscape shouldn't be all I.P.-driven blockbusters and Oscar plays. We need, and frankly we deserve, enjoyable B-minus action movies that give us sufficient push to get out of the house and into theaters. Thank you, Jason Statham, for all you do for moviegoers. Which is to say, for killing a bunch of people on-screen in over-the-top ways for reasons we can only sort of glean from the plotting.
