"Jay Kelly" trailer: George Clooney and Adam Sandler team up in new Noah Baumbach film

Summer movie season is effectively over. Stick a fork in it. Aside from "Freakier Friday," there’s nothing left on the blockbuster buffet. That means it’s time for the industry to shift gears. Prestige season is peeking its head out, and one of the early birds is "Jay Kelly."

The film comes from Noah Baumbach, looking to rebound from "White Noise" being a total whiff. Prior to that, though, "Marriage Story" was quite successful and he did co-write the cultural phenomenon "Barbie". He’s back in the Oscar hunt with "Jay Kelly," which stars George Clooney as a well-known actor in the midst of an existential spiral while on a European press tour. Classic Clooney stuff.

While there are heavy hitters in the cast, including Oscar winner Laura Dern, much of the attention has been around Adam Sandler. Sandler plays Jay Kelly's manager and friend, and there has been talk about him possibly getting an Oscar nomination finally.

Of course, that got us wondering: could he suffer the Eddie Murphy in "Dreamgirls" fate? Murphy was all but crowned Best Supporting Actor until "Norbit" hit theaters with a thud. Now, Sandler has "Happy Gilmore 2" lurking in the wings, and it's...not good.

But here’s the thing: "Happy Gilmore 2" may be bad, but it’s not "Norbit" bad. And unlike Murphy, who had some bridges pre-burned in Hollywood, Sandler has built a reputation as a generally well-liked guy. This will undoubtedly be one of the big storylines during awards season.

"Jay Kelly" will hit theaters on November 14.
