It has long been believed that Jay-Z's efforts to make Kendrick Lamar Super Bowl halftime show come to fruition was a shot at Drake. But it's an allegation that the music icon vehemently denies.
In a recent interview with GQ, Jay-Z said that there was no effort to take a side in the multi-year beef between Lamar and Drake. He said that his decision to bring Lamar to the NFL was merely a by-product of how great Lamar had been on the music scene at that point.
"I chose the guy that was having a monster year. I think it was the right choice," Jay-Z said. "It wasn't in some sort of alliance to a battle. What I care about them two guys battling? What’s that got to do with me? Have at it. Have fun."
"They drag everybody in it, like everyone’s part of this conspiracy to undermine Drake, I guess. But, it’s like, what the (expletive)? Like what?!? I’m (expletive) Jay-Z! All due respect to them. I’m (expletive) Hov. Respectfully, for what?!"
The feud between Kendrick Lamar and Drake has evolved over more than a decade, shifting from competitive tension to one of hip-hop’s most explosive lyrical battles. Subtle friction dates back to the early 2010s. While both artists initially downplayed hostility, interviews and subliminal lyrics over the years kept speculation alive, as each questioned the other’s authenticity, artistry, and place in rap’s hierarchy.
The rivalry escalated dramatically in 2024 with a rapid-fire exchange of diss tracks that captivated the music world. Kendrick released blistering songs widely interpreted as direct attacks on Drake’s character and credibility, while Drake fired back with tracks challenging Kendrick’s personal life and public persona. The lyrical back-and-forth dominated streaming platforms, social media, and industry discussion, drawing comparisons to classic rap feuds. Beyond the personal shots, the conflict highlighted deeper debates within hip-hop.
