‘Jeopardy’ Fans Have Problem With Final NFL Clue

Although all three Jeopardy! contestants got the final clue right, fans had one problem with the easy clue. Adam Remsen returned for his eighth game after sweeping the previous week.

Remsen, from Memphis, Tennessee, has a seven-day total of $149,303. He tried to add to that on June 23 when the attorney and theater producer played Joey Tebban, from Stamford, Connecticut, and Sarah Michel, from Buffalo, New York. Warning: Spoilers for the June 23 episode of Jeopardy! ahead!

The beginning of the game didn’t start off too well for Remsen and Michel, a substitute teacher, who both had -$800 after the first clue. Remsen got back on the board on clue eight, as Tebban, a motorsports production assistant, had the lead with $1,000. However, by the first 15 clues, Remsen took the lead with $3,200.

On clue 16, Remsen found the Daily Double. He wagered all of his money in “Poors.” The clue was “In an 1862 novel, he wrote the line ‘Jean had no work. The family had no bread… seven children.'”

“Who is Victor Hugo?” he answered correctly. This gave him $6,400.

At the end of the round, Remsen had $7,000. Tebban was in second place with $3,800. Michel had $3,000.

In Double Jeopardy, Michel found the first DD on clue two. She had $3,000 and wagered all of her money.

The clue in “One Letter Different” was “Minuteman or Tomahawk, for example & an official written message.” Michel blanked on an answer, so she dropped down to $0. The correct response was missile and missive.

Michel moved up to $1,200 by the time she found the second DD on clue 11. She wagered the allotted $2,000 in “Their Last Bow.” The clue was “This American bandleader played a last U.K. ‘Hangar Concert’ Oct. 3, 1944; his band played on Christmas in Paris without him.”

She correctly responded with “Who is Glenn Miller?” This gave her $3,200.

Remsen dominated the rest of the round and ended with $18,200. Tebban was in second place with $8,200. Michel had $4,000.

“Ranks & Titles” was the category for Final Jeopardy. The clue was “One of the titles the U.S. President has includes nicknames for 2 NFL teams that represent these cities.”

All three game show contestants had the correct response of “What are Washington and Kansas City?” Michel wagered $3,284, making her final total $7,284. The answer was meant to mean the Kansas City “Chiefs” and the Washington “Commanders.”

Tebban wagered $199, giving him $8,399. Remsen’s wager was $901, giving him a total of $19,101. He won the game and had an eight-day total of $168,404.

Fans reacted to the Final Jeopardy clue on Reddit. “Good FJ clue, annoyingly broad category,” one said.

“Especially for a clue that’s mainly about sports, the writers should be up front about it with the category,” another replied.

“I probably would have just called it SPORTS FRANCHISES. The aspect of the political title is obvious enough that it doesn’t really need to be mentioned in the category title,” a third added.

“I think the FJ clue was creative, but the wording of the clue, like with many FJ clues, is a little strange. I can’t say it’s grammatically incorrect, but it’s just not my writing style,” one last fan said.
