Jeopardy! divided viewers along political lines on Thursday, July 3, after a controversial clue sparked a back-and-forth debate on social media.
The clue in question came under the “Bodies of Water” category and read: “Galveston Bay is an inlet of this much larger inlet of the Atlantic Ocean.” Contestant Andy Briseño, a novelist and associate professor from Natchitoches, Louisiana, answered, “What is the Gulf of Mexico?”
Host Ken Jennings deemed the response right, telling Briseño, “Gulf of Mexico is correct.”
The answer created drama because in January 2025, President Donald Trump signed a controversial executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America. While some online map services and U.S.-based media outlets have adopted the name change, many others, especially internationally, continue to use the Gulf of Mexico.
Fans across social media reacted to the moment, including one Facebook user who wrote, “The correct question to the last answer in the Jeopardy round tonight was “what is the Gulf of MEXICO”?. So pleased that they didn’t subscribe to that other nonsense.”
“Anyone with a functioning brain knows it’s the Gulf of Mexico. Has been since the 1500’s,” replied another commenter.

“The name of an international body of water cannot be changed by a presidential executive order. Everyone with a brain knows that,” another added.
“Good for you, Jeopardy, for keeping the rightful name of the Gulf of Mexico,” wrote one X user.
“They subtly troll the orange menace often. Love it,” another commented.
Another said, “If Jeopardy accepts Gulf of Mexico, then it’s Gulf of Mexico. Sorry, Jeopardy makes the rules.”
However, another commenter fired back, writing, “The facts make the rules. The whole point of this game is factoids. You don’t get to change the answers because you don’t like them..”
@Jeopardy it is Gulf of America, not Mexico. The contestant got it wrong but the libs in Cali let it go!!! Ugh!!

“I think that was a Jeopardy dig. Not too cool on Jeopardy’s part. They should stay out of politics,” said one Facebook user.
Another added, “I thought it was disrespectful since it is A legal Executive Order. It’s Gulf of America.”
“PRAYING Your Favorite President CANCELS the broadcasting license for “Jeopardy!“” said another.
Another asked, “The question is, would the judges accept Gulf of America in addition to Gulf of Mexico? Both MIGHT be considered correct.”
“I imagine they would have accepted either answer although I am happy he said gulf of Mexico,” one fan added.
