John Boyega, who played Finn in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, has been vocal in his disappointment with how the trilogy handled his character. You might wonder how he would have handled the trilogy differently. Well, at Fan Expo Boston, he shared how he imagined the arc with Finn and Rey would go, and it’s very different from how the trilogy panned out.
According to ScreenRant, Boyega shared his expectations for the sequel trilogy at Fan Expo Boston. When he first read the script for The Force Awakens, he imagined a very different storyline for Finn and Rey. He said,
“I think I assumed he was Force-sensitive from The Force Awakens script or at least by the time I got to the end of The Force Awakens script. I thought they were planning dual Jedis. I actually thought that they would Obi-Wan and Darth Vader us a bit. That we would turn against each other or something along those lines.”
Indeed, Finn’s natural lightsaber skills in The Force Awakens could indicate that he is Force-sensitive. While The Rise of Skywalker further hinted at Finn’s Force-sensitivity, it never became a major plot point. The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi also strongly indicated that Rey could be in danger of turning to the dark side, but it never actually happened. While Finn did contribute to the Resistance in important ways, including being promoted to a general, the sequel trilogy ultimately focused on Rey’s journey to become a Jedi and Kylo Ren’s eventual redemption arc, not on Finn.
Boyega has previously expressed frustration with the sequel trilogy’s lack of a plan and its treatment of Finn, as well as how he was harassed for his race by parts of the fanbase. Would his ideas for Finn and Rey to become light and dark Force users and turn against each other have made for a more satisfying trilogy? Obviously, we can’t know for sure, but it would definitely have had potential for some deep storytelling. Before The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker came out, I myself was hoping for Rey to turn to the dark side. I was also hoping that the movies would explore Finn’s past as a stormtrooper more.
As of the writing of this article, Boyega isn’t set up to return for another Star Wars project. However, there is an upcoming Rey movie, tentatively titled New Jedi Order. It is unknown whether or not Finn will return for that movie, but at Fan Expo Philadelphia earlier this year, Boyega indicated that he might be open to playing Finn again. Perhaps Finn’s Force-sensitivity will finally get the story arc that it deserves.
