John Mulaney is divorcing wife Anna Marie Tendler, who is 'heartbroken'

John Mulaney's fans were thrilled to hear that he was returning to the stage with new stand-up material, but less than a week later, there is sad news out of the Mulaney camp.

According to Page Six’s Emily Smith, the 38-year-old comedian asked for a divorce three months ago.

“A spokesman for Mulaney confirmed the divorce to Page Six and added, ‘John will not have any further comment as he continues to focus on his recovery and getting back to work.’  Tendler—an artist who works across many mediums and is a master's candidate in NYU’s Costume Studies program—added through her spokesperson, ‘I am heartbroken that John has decided to end our marriage. I wish him support and success as he continues his recovery.’”

The couple married in July 2014, and Mulaney often pulled from their relationship for his on-stage material—especially their adopted French bulldog named Petunia.

Mulaney's much-hyped return to the stage sold out almost instantaneously after his May 10-14 dates at New York City's City Winery were announced last week. 

It will be interesting to see how personal the Chicago-area native gets in his new set, John Mulaney: From Scratch, after a particularly tumultuous time in his life. He completed a 60-day rehab stint for alcohol and cocaine abuse in February.
