John Stamos recalls the last time he saw Bob Saget: 'He didn’t look like a guy who was going to die'

Last Friday (Jan. 21), The Los Angeles Times published the eulogy John Stamos read at Bob Saget's funeral.

Stamos is continuing to honor the memory of his former Full House co-star and dear friend with a first-person account published by The New York Times. In it, Stamos shared the last time he hung out with Saget, who died unexpectedly Jan. 9:

"Bob was always worried about everyone else, but he talked about death a lot. His wife, Kelly Rizzo, said she had a premonition. I didn’t see it. The last time we were all together, we went on a double date to Nobu, maybe a month before he passed away. He didn’t look like a guy who was going to die, but he was very calm, which was odd for Bob. He was at peace somehow. And he listened and he was thoughtful and didn’t interrupt; he cared about what we were saying. I hate to say it, but it was the Bob that I always wanted to see. And it was the last time I saw him."

The 58-year-old actor reminisced on how the duo didn't like each other at first but grew so close that they "were like a married couple" at one point 10 or 11 years ago. Stamos explained that Saget's divorce from his first wife, Sherri Kramer, and the death of Stamos' father were two huge life events that they leaned on each other to get through.

"I think that one really cemented our friendship," said Stamos of his father's death and Saget's subsequently generosity. "And then it just got closer and closer from there, to the point of we just were there through all the most important moments. Now I have to get through them without him, you know?"

Stamos has been grieving Saget on Instagram, beginning immediately after news broke:

Saget was staying at the Ritz-Carlton in Orlando when hotel staff found him unresponsive. He had launched his "I Don't Do Negative" stand-up comedy tour two days prior. An initial autopsy confirmed "no evidence of drug use or foul play," and an official cause of death has yet to be revealed.

Saget was 65 years old.
