Keith Hernandez is still raking in checks from his appearances on ‘Seinfeld’ in the early ‘90s.
The former first baseman, now a broadcaster for the New York Mets, guest-starred in a double-episode titled ‘The Boyfriend’ that aired in February 1992.
Hernandez portrayed a fictionalized version of himself, a character entangled in a love triangle with Jerry Seinfeld and Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Elaine Benes.
The episodes saw Seinfeld and Benes fight for Hernandez’s attention, while he was also accused of tossing a “loogie” in a fictional game against the Philadelphia Phillies.
In the end, Roger McDowell turned out to be the guilty party.
As for Hernandez, he’s still getting a few thousand dollars a year on account of that “magic loogie.”
“It varies, but I can tell you that on an annual basis I’m getting close to $5,000 still. It’s the gift that keeps giving,” he told Jimmy Traina on ‘SI Media’.
“Remember one thing: I was the guest star.”
Benes dumped Hernandez once he upset her by lighting a cigarette on their date, and that was it for him. However, he returned for the series finale in 1998 but didn’t speak at all and appeared on screen only briefly.
That he’s still getting paid for his appearances in ‘The Boyfriend’ is a testament to how good the episodes were. They received a huge reception, with writers Larry Davis and Larry Levin nominated for Best Episodic Comedy at the Writers Guild of America Awards.
Hernandez has since won some accolades himself. An Emmy Award-winning sportscaster, the 72-year-old has been calling Mets games alongside Gary Cohen and Ron Darling since 1998.
While he can’t retire off the ‘Seinfeld’ checks, it must still feel nice getting a few grand every year to do nothing.
