Kieran Culkin wasn’t “fully inside [his] body” after winning his first Oscar.
The 42-year-old actor took home the Academy Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his work on ‘A Real Pain’ on Sunday (02.03.25) but it took some time for it to sink in.
Speaking backstage at Los Angeles’ Dolby Theater, he told reporters: “I don’t know, I’m not fully inside my body right now but trying my best to be present…
“I have no idea how I’m feeling.”
Kieran previously admitted he had initially turned down the project because he didn’t want to be away from wife Jazz Charlton and their two children for too long, and he’s glad he had a change of heart.
He reflected: “The thing with saying no to the movie, it wasn’t for any creative reason it’s just the way the schedule changed and it was taking me away from my kids for a month so I was like, ‘No’. But then I got talked into it and obviously I’m very glad that I was.”
The ‘Succession’ actor made a quick connection with Jesse Eisenberg’s screenplay, but it wasn’t until the movie was released that he realised he’d based his performance on someone he knew.
He said: “It felt different, the script was incredibly tight, I didn’t wanna rehearse or talk about it or anything. First time I read something where I was like, fully understand this guy, I don’t even want to read it again, I wanna show up on the day and go ‘What scene? Oh yes, this one’ and the words got in here quickly because they were so well written, so that was a fun new approach.
“It felt like I knew who this guy was, but I couldn’t identify it and didn’t want to analyse it, I know who this guy is, I’m just gonna read it.
“It wasn’t until a year later that I watched it that I was like ‘Oh my God, I know someone exactly like this and I didn’t realise I was doing that.
“The moment I realised, my wife leaned over to me in the theatre and said his name in my ear. I was like ‘You’re right, I’m totally doing him and I didn’t even know.’
“That was an unusual experience, I’ve never had that before.”

Bears GM speaks out after superstar goes down with injury
Bears cornerback Jaylon Johnson is expected to miss most of training camp due to a leg injury, per ESPN’s Courtney Cronin. Johnson was placed on the non-football injury list when veterans reported to Chicago for camp. He suffered the injury during offseason training, according to Bears general manager Ryan Poles. Johnson is coming off his second consecutive Pro Bowl and is headed into the second year of a four-year, $76M deal. He has dealt with a number of injuries over his career, playing no more than 15 games in a season over the first four years of his career. In 2024, he played a full season for the first time, starting all 17 games with a career-high 1,032 snaps. An extended absence into the regular season would force Chicago to find another starting cornerback among their veteran depth, but Poles said that the team is not “overly concerned” about a long-term injury. “We’ve got a lot of faith that he’s going to put in the time to rehab and be his full self when he comes back,” said Poles on Tuesday. 2023 fifth-rounder Terell Smith will likely step into a first-team role in Johnson’s absence. Chicago largely relied on a cornerback trio of Johnson, Tyrique Stevenson and Kyler Gordon last year; Smith is the only remaining defensive back on the roster who played at least 150 snaps on the boundary for the Bears in 2024, according to Pro Football Focus. Offseason signings Nick McCloud and Tre Flowers may also see a bump in reps over the coming weeks as Johnson rehabs his leg with his eyes on returning for the Bears’ Week 1 opener against the Vikings.
New report suggests Christian Wilkins release related to 'incident' with teammate
There may be more to Christian Wilkins’ recent surprise release from the Las Vegas Raiders. NFL reporter Josina Anderson reported Saturday that "some sources believe an incident involving a teammate may have factored in-part into the Raiders' fatigue and release" of Wilkins. The nature of the incident is not clear. However, many believe the Raiders had a very good reason to move on from Wilkins considering the money they had invested in him. It also suggests the Raiders saw no alternative if they went straight to a release. Wilkins was dumped by the Raiders just one year into a four-year, $110 million deal. The Raiders suggested Wilkins failed to take rehab seriously as he tries to work his way back from a foot injury. Other teams do not appear to have the same concerns about Wilkins as the Raiders did, and he should find a new landing spot fairly easily. That is one of the reasons some suspect there is more to the Raiders’ decision than they are publicly saying.
Commanders WR Terry McLaurin expands on ending training-camp holdout
Washington Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin had been holding out of training camp but reported Sunday. McLaurin was fined $200K ($50K per day) for skipping four days of camp. The fines, however, aren't the only reason he returned to the team's facility in Ashburn, Va. He also missed spending time with fans and teammates. According to ESPN's John Keim, supporters chanted his name at Sunday's practice, and the WR later signed autographs for approximately 30 minutes. "It feels good to be around my teammates and around the fans," the WR said, per Keim. "I can't beat that at all. They showed me a lot of love and support. You lose sight of something when the business gets involved, but I never lost sight of the way they supported me. It's business, but it has nothing to do with them." While it's a positive for the Commanders that McLaurin is no longer holding out, it's fair to wonder whether contract negotiations will continue to drag on. The WR is entering the final year of his deal and seeking an extension. (He's set to make $15.5M this season.) McLaurin and the team have made little progress in negotiations thus far. The two-time Pro Bowler recorded a career-high 13 touchdown catches in 17 games last season, but his age could be a concern for the Commanders. McLaurin turns 30 on Sept. 15. He's already injured as well. McLaurin is starting training camp on the active/physically unable to perform list because of an ankle issue. The WR is aiming to make a quick recovery and insists his age shouldn't be a factor in contract negotiations. McLaurin said the Commanders should view it on a "case-by-case" basis. McLaurin has been one of the NFL's more consistent pass-catchers, surpassing 1,000 receiving yards in five of his first six seasons with Washington. Now that he's back with the team, perhaps that will remind the Commanders why they love having him around. That could expedite contract talks.
Yankees manager provides major update on Aaron Judge's injury
New York Yankees star Aaron Judge missed Saturday's game against the Philadelphia Phillies with an elbow injury, and the slugger is now headed to the injured list. The Yankees fell 9-4 to the Phillies on Saturday at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, N.Y., which marked their third consecutive loss. Judge played in Friday night's 12-5 loss to Philadelphia, but Aaron Boone announced before Saturday's game that Judge was dealing with an "elbow issue" and would sit out. Following his team's latest loss, Boone shared some new information about Judge's injury. Judge has been diagnosed with a flexor strain, but the Yankees believe he can return in less than two weeks. When Judge returns to the lineup, Boone said it will initially be as a designated hitter. Judge is having an outstanding season. He entered Saturday batting .342, which is the best mark in baseball. The reigning American League MVP has 37 home runs, 85 RBI and a 1.160 OPS. The Yankees are now six games behind the AL East-leading Toronto Blue Jays and fighting to remain atop the wild-card race. It goes without saying that they are hopeful Judge will be able to return as soon as possible.
