Kristen Bell teases a first-episode 'twist' in the 'Gossip Girl' reboot series

Kristen Bell is the only cast member from the original Gossip Girl to reprise her role for the forthcoming HBO Max reboot series, and she teased what fans can expect while virtually chatting with The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon last night (June 9).

"The new show is really cool 'cause it talks all about how social media has changed us, and it's more risque 'cause it's on HBO Max," the 40-year-old actress said. "There's a twist at the end of Episode 1 that's really different."

The subtle mention came as part of a larger answer to Fallon's question about how Bell, who voiced the faceless Gossip Girl for all 121 episodes of the iconic 2007-12 run on The CW before making a physical cameo in the series finale, about if she likes voiceover work.

This was her full response:

"I love it. You know, I like the challenge of having to evoke emotion from the audience by using only one tool. Like, the tone, pitch, cadence of my voice. It's really fun. And, you know, on Gossip Girl—the new show is really cool 'cause it talks all about how social media has changed us, and it's more risque 'cause it's on HBO Max. There's a twist at the end of Episode 1 that's really different. So, that's fun, but that's much more of, like, a character. "And then with Frozen—I guess it's also a character 'cause it's a little more bubbly than I am, but I just like storytelling, and I like being able to have the challenge of only using my voice. Also, like you know from V.Os you've done, you really can go in your pajamas, and it's great. But it's also been the main form of work that I've been able to do during the pandemic."

HBO Max dropped the official trailer yesterday (June 9). "Super Rich Kids" served as the backdrop, and OG fans would have picked up on the subtle nod to the November 2012 episode "Monstrous Ball."

Along with Bell, the reboot retained original creator Josh Schwartz. This time around, however, his co-creator is Joshua Safran, who initially served as an executive producer on the series, instead of Stephanie Savage.

Gossip Girl will begin its long-awaited renaissance July 8.
