Brainiac is officially coming to the DCU in Superman sequel movie Man of Tomorrow. We kind of already knew this, thanks to teases by James Gunn, but now it’s official. This iconic Superman foe will be the villain of Man of Tomorrow—yes, Brainiac will be the evil that brings even Lux Luthor and Superman together. But who will play Brainiac in the DCU? Well, James Gunn reveals he has cast Lars Eidinger in the role.
Here’s what James Gunn had to say about casting Lars Eidinger as the DCU’s Brainiac in Man of Tomorrow. “In our worldwide search for Brainiac in Man of Tomorrow, Lars Eidinger rose to the top. Welcome to the DCU, Lars.” Short and sweet. But we know a little bit more about the film. James Gunn previously explained that Man of Tomorrow is “a story about Lex Luthor and Superman having to work together to a certain degree against a much, much bigger threat. It’s more complicated than that but that’s a big part of it. It’s as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie.” And although it’s Lex movie and a Superman movie, it’s now also officially a Lars Eidinger and Brainiac movie.
As for what Lars Eidinger’s Brainiac role entails in the DCU’s Man of Tomorrow? Well, it could go in a number of ways. You can read EVERYTHING there is to know about Brainiac in our full character explaine. But as we’ve shared previously “Brainiac is one of Superman’s greatest foes. Over the years, Brainiac has gone from alien to AI, but his powers of intelligence have remained a common thread. In recent incarnations, Brainiac became a Krypton creation, actually created by Superman’s father, Jor-El, making him a kind of evil brother to Superman. Where James Gunn will go with Brainiac in the DCU, we can’t yet say—but it seems like he may lean into the Krypton connection to make Superman: Man of Tomorrow a Superman family film.” It’s possible that Gunn might even bring Superboy/Conner Kent to the DCU on this occasion.
As for Brainiac’s actor Lars Eidinger, he’s a bit of an unknown as well. This German actor hasn’t been in too much we recognize right away. He’s known for Clouds of Sils Maria, Persian Lessons, Personal Shopper, and Home for the Weekend. But if James Gunn sees his DCU Brainiac in Lars Eidinger, then he must be good.
Lars Eidinger’s Brainiac will arrive to the DCU in the Superman movie, Man of Tomorrow. Man of Tomorrow releases on July 9, 2027.
