The Origin of the Groundbreaking “Miseducation of Lauryn Hill”

Released on August 25, 1998, “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” was recorded after Hill’s band, the Fugees, went on hiatus. Predominantly written and produced by Hill herself, the album is centered on multiple themes of self-education. These themes include love, faith, relationship complexities, interpersonal conflicts, and motherhood. With it’s eclectic vibes, the album blends neo soul, R&B, hip-hop, and reggae, and soul. Guest appearances include Carlos Santana, Mary J. Blige, and D’Angelo.

“The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” won multiple accolades including Album of the Year and Best R&B Album, at the 41st Annual Grammy Awards. The album produced three major singles: “Doo Wop (That Thing)”, which topped the US Billboard Hot 100; “Ex-Factor”; and “Everything Is Everything”. The album’s success propelled Hill to global prominence, and remains her only studio release.  It is widely regarded as one of the most influential and groundbreaking albums of the 1990s.
