Letterboxd Video Store Platform Is Officially Live

Letterboxd has been cinephiles’ favorite online social platform for years. It’s a great place for people to write reviews for movies they’ve just seen, share their love of older cult films, and make lists. A lot of lists. Now, via The Hollywood Reporter, we’ve learned that Letterboxd will officially launch its new film rental program, Video Store, which is now live. Letterboxd first announced the program in November. The films themselves display on “shelves,” like an old mom-and-pop rental store. They come in themed groups with title selection based on member demand.

This virtual store also has two primary shelves: one for “Unreleased Gems” or recent festival films and older titles that “slipped through the cracks” of the distribution system. Films under this banner will only be available in Video Store for 30 days. “Lost and Found” focuses on resurfacing titles members love. Letterboxd CEO and co-founder Matthew Buchanan said the Unreleased Gems section “Was a response to the sheer number of incredible films out there, that for whatever reason, have yet to be more widely distributed, but that we know our community is keen to champion.”

The main reason for Letterboxd’s Video Store is that independent, festival, and foreign language films face many difficulties in distribution. Buchanan explained further, saying, “Our thought process was simple. Is there a way to build upon that mission and passion by providing films themselves, in a way not done elsewhere?” Video Store showcases a TVOD model without a subscription. Available in 23 countries at launch, rental prices and title availability vary by region.

In America, films carry a price between $3.99 to $19.99. Movie fans can watch Video Store titles on TV via Apple TV 4K, Chromecast and AirPlay. And they can also watch on the web, via iOS and Android, with additional smart TV apps planned for future use.
