When the "Naked Gun" reboot starring Liam Neeson debuted a teaser trailer, it was met with acclaim online. It spoke to a desire for theatrical comedy, but the stakes certainly feel weirdly high for a silly comedy sure to be rife with dumb jokes and sight gags. Now, "The Naked Gun" has a full trailer, giving us our first real look at the movie.
First, it might not be a good sign that basically everything from the teaser is in this trailer. In terms of the new stuff, it's a mixed bag. We get our first look as Pamela Anderson, who gets one of a handful of strong, vintage "Naked Gun" jokes. There's also some iffy stuff, like the heat vision joke that is basically taken whole cloth from the second "Austin Powers" movie.
They are wisely leaning into Liam Neeson's history of playing vigilante tough guys in B-minus action movies and thrillers. The trailer posting even includes the line, "Only one man has the particular set of skills... to lead Police Squad and save the world!," which riffs on "Taken."
Maybe the future of mid-budget summer comedies shouldn't rest on the shoulders of a movie with a trailer that includes multiple jokes about Neeson's Frank Drebin Jr. having bathroom emergencies, but here we are.
