"Lilo & Stitch" broke the Memorial Day weekend box office record

Apparently people really wanted to spend Memorial Day weekend in theaters. This was a record-breaking weekend at the domestic box office. "Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning" had an excellent weekend itself. Tom Cruise's final film in the franchise (or at least it better be to earn the plot of "Final Reckoning") made $77 million domestically, the most ever for the franchise. Playing well overseas, the movie has brought in $190 million worldwide. And yet, that was only for second in the box office. Ethan Hunt got his lunch handed to him by a small Hawaiian girl and her alien bestie.

Any concerns we asserted about fatigue related to live-action Disney adaptations have been assuaged. Turns out that it was just that nobody wanted to see that "Snow White" movie that looked bad and had a poisonous marketing rollout! "Lilo & Stitch," based off a rare underdog story for Disney animation, brought in a whopping $183 million domestically over the four-day weekend. That is a Memorial Day weekend record, and the second-best four-day weekend haul in history behind "Black Panther."

The story about a girl and her little blue compatriot also brought in $158.7 million internationally. "Lilo & Stitch" is already at $341.7 million worldwide, so you can probably pen it in for $1 billion when all is said and done. There's a good chance "Lilo & Stitch" will overtake "A Minecraft Movie" as the biggest movie of the year, and will then probably stay there until the third "Avatar" comes out in December.

This was a real "everybody wins" weekend at theaters. Families went to see "Lilo & Stitch" in droves, while adults got to go see Cruise and company do the action movie thing. Thanks to the films still remaining in theaters with a bit of cache left, this was the most-lucrative Memorial Day weekend in the history of the domestic box office. We owe it all to "Final Destination: Bloodlines." Or not.

By the way, the film that previously had the biggest Memorial Day weekend? That would be "Top Gun: Maverick." Lilo is fully coming for Tom Cruise's neck.
