It’s 2025. The world often feels like it’s on fire; nothing makes that much sense anymore, and everywhere the ceremony of innocence is drowned. (That’s a bit of romantic poet humor for your morning.) And so, when today we read our least favorite kind of fire, Fyre Festival, had been purchased by LimeWire, there was really nothing to do but shrug. Add to that the idea that Ryan Reynolds, notably, our Deadpool, also wanted to buy Fyre Festival but lost out to LimeWire, yep, it’s still a big old shrug from us. This word salad can’t phase us. We are impenetrable.
If you’ve been living under a rock, Fyre Festival was a massive, failed scam of a party created by Billy McFarland, wherein many young people willingly parted with their money over the promise of living like an influencer for a weekend. Famously, conditions went from bad to worse over the course of an evening; there was nowhere to sleep, and cheese sandwiches were THE luxury item of the evening. Of course, the internet watched with bated breath. Now there are documentaries about it on Hulu and Netflix, and they’re both good. LimeWire, meanwhile, used to be a file-sharing service where the cool kids went to download music illegally. These days, it’s an NFT service that seems to involve crypto. (Yuck.) Although, hey, you can still share files through it. All this to say, we can see why Fyre Festival and LimeWire might work well together—we just don’t like it.
In a release about its purchase of Fyre Festival, LimeWire shares, “The Fyre brand became one of the most recognizable names in recent internet history – a symbol of viral marketing, ambition, and the consequences of overpromising. Despite its controversial origins, it remains deeply embedded in pop culture and continues to spark conversation years later. LimeWire sees this enduring relevance as an opportunity: not to recreate the past, but to reimagine what Fyre can stand for in the future.”
Uh and huh. Julian Zehetmayr, CEO of LimeWire, adds, “Fyre became a symbol of hype gone wrong, but it also made history. We’re not bringing the festival back – we’re bringing the brand and the meme back to life. This time with real experiences, and without the cheese sandwiches.”

But LimeWire, if there are real experiences and no cheese sandwiches, is it even Fyre Festival? We fear we’re about to find out. And somehow, we fear even more that Ryan Reynolds will somehow take part in the shenanigans when we do. Ryan Reynolds ALSO wanted to buy Fyre Festival, but lost out to LimeWire. Reynolds said in a statement, “Congrats to LimeWire for their winning bid for Fyre Fest. I look forward to attending their first event but will be bringing my own palette of water.”
Oh, and don’t worry, there’s ALREADY LimeWire and Fyre Festival merch to buy. This hat for instance is just $40.
We’d beg someone to release us from this hell, but honestly, we are tired. So we’ll just go have a cheese sandwich instead.
