In The Heights has been praised by many in the Latinx community, including Lin-Manuel Miranda and Anthony Ramos, for helping them feel seen and heard.
But that has not necessarily been the case for Black Latinx people watching the new film adaptation of the Tony Award-winning musical.
Miranda addressed the online criticism with an apology posted to Twitter on Monday:

In The Heights hit theaters and HBO Max last Thursday (June 10).
The film was directed by Jon M. Chu and starred Ramos as Washington Heights bodega owner Usnavi, originally portrayed by Miranda in the musical, craving a better life back in his native Dominican Republic.
