Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan have remained an important part of each other's lives since co-starring as Tess and Anna Coleman in Freaky Friday, and it made all the difference when reuniting for Nisha Ganatra's Freakier Friday.
"I've known Lindsay since she was 15," Curtis told Entertainment Weekly. "That's just an extraordinary thing, to watch someone walk through life." That's right, the first movie was released back in 2003, which means that 22 years will have passed by the time that the sequel is finally released.
"In every country I went to [promote Halloween Ends], the only consistent question I got was 'When are you making another Freaky Friday?' I called you on the road at one point and said, 'This is all people are asking,'" she continued, referring to Lohan. "Clearly, there was an appetite for this."
The story picks up years after Tess (Curtis) and Anna (Lohan) endured an identity crisis. Anna now has a daughter of her own and a soon-to-be stepdaughter. As they navigate the myriad challenges that come when two families merge, Tess and Anna discover that lightning might indeed strike twice.
"When Jamie called me in Ireland, I was like, 'Yes, I'm in, let's do it.' It's not very often that you get to work with someone who's been such a big part of your life on a personal level," Lohan added. "That was exciting for me, to come back and do a big-screen film with a woman that I admire, that's part of my life off screen. To have that chance again, it doesn't happen much. I felt lucky to be able to do it."
The sequel is based on the book Freaky Friday by Mary Rodgers and Lohan considers it manifestation, saying, "I had this thing in my head during COVID, I was like, 'I want to work with Netflix and do a couple movies, but I want to work with Disney again, too.' It came to fruition because I believed it. Those things are meant to happen. I love my life, and I'm grateful for these moments I have."
Chad Michael Murray, Rosalind Chao, and Mark Harmon are also set to return, with Julia Butters, Sophia Hammons, Manny Jacinto, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, and Vanessa Bayer making up the rest of the cast.
"When I asked the question, 'Where has he been?' I always thought Jake had a room somewhere, in the closet of his house, where he’s got this wonderful Tess shrine, and that he’s been in love with her and he keeps a faded photo of her in his wallet, but he still loves it and opens it up from time to time and touches it," Murray shared. "That was all part of the backstory that was going along with who Jake is in this fantasy world that he’s put himself in."
Freakier Friday will be released August 8 in theaters.
