Luke Grimes is putting his guitar down and picking up a badge. The Yellowstone star has spent the last few months on tour as a rising country artist, but he recently confirmed via Instagram that he's "heading back to his other job."
Fans didn’t have to guess long. CBS made the official announcement about the Yellowstone spinoff series back in May. The Utah Film Commission confirmed filming will start in the fall.
Greenlit for a 13-episode run, Y: Marshals will premiere midseason 2026 on Sunday nights. It marks a major swing for the network as it brings the Yellowstone universe to broadcast TV for the first time, rather than streaming on Paramount+.
That move seems strategic, as past CBS reruns of Yellowstone and Tulsa King drew huge numbers.
As for the plot, Y: Marshals picks up with Kayce after he’s handed over the Yellowstone Ranch to the Broken Rock Reservation and walked away from the family dynasty. Now, he joins an elite U.S. Marshals unit, merging his cowboy instincts and Navy SEAL training to bring justice to the Montana backcountry. Think Sicario with spurs.
The official logline promises a deep dive into the psychological toll of the job as Kayce and his team operate as "the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence." The new series is created by Spencer Hudnut (SEAL Team) with Luke Grimes onboard as both lead actor and executive producer.
Taylor Sheridan remains involved as an EP alongside the Yellowstone brain trust from 101 Studios and MTV Entertainment.
Grimes, who originally debuted as Kayce in 2018, has quietly become one of the most compelling stars in the Sheridan-verse. This new series cements his status as the next-gen Dutton to watch.
For fans, it’s the long-awaited solo chapter for a character whose inner conflicts and tactical skills deserve center stage. "You are the best at both your jobs," one fan said in the Instagram comments. "Wishing you the best with your new series," reads another.
The countdown to Y: Marshals has begun. Production is officially underway this summer.
