The Magic 8 Ball has been around for years. Seeking some advice? Have a burning question about your future? Want to know if your crush really likes you? All can be answered by consulting the Magic 8 ball. Soon, the popular fortune-telling toy will hit our TV screens. M. Night Shyamalan announced Monday that he will be teaming up with Emmy-winning writer Brad Falchuk (Glee, American Horror Story, Pose) and Mattel to direct a live-action scripted Magic 8 Ball series.
The Academy Award-nominated director announced the upcoming series in an Instagram post on October 13. “Been working on this for a couple years… Who’s in?” said Shyamalan. The post showcased the front page of the script for the pilot episode of season one. Naturally, a Magic 8 Ball can also be seen peeking in from the top corner.
Shyamalan and Falchuk are set to showrun the series together, with Falchuk as writer and Shyamalan as director. In an official statement by Mattel, the series “aims to reimagine the classic Magic 8 Ball as the centerpiece of a high-concept, character-driven supernatural drama that blends psychological intensity with cultural intrigue.” We can assume from the Instagram post that the series will be titled Magic 8 Ball, or at least tentatively so.
Shyamalan is well-known for his strange, thought-provoking concepts and twist endings. His past work includes The Sixth Sense, Split, Signs, and Old. Knowing that this project will have a similar supernatural aspect, we can expect it to follow in typical Shyamalan style.
The Magic 8 Ball has been a pop culture phenomenon for 75 years. Selling one million units annually, according to Mattel, it remains a symbol of curiousity and fun. You simply ask your question, shake the oversized ball, and watch as your answer is revealed. It’s not shocking to see the popular toy reimagined in on-screen form. As of late, Mattel has been notorious for pumping out toy-to-screen adaptations, such as the very impactful Barbie movie in 2023.
Will the Magic 8 Ball adaptation have the same impact? Cannot predict now. Still, given Shyamalan’s history of weirdly-intriguing projects, it is certain to be interesting. Check in for more updates about the upcoming Magic 8 Ball series as they come.
