Mariel Hemingway: Woody Allen's 'Manhattan' '100 percent' wouldn't get made today

Woody Allen's Manhattan has been controversial since its release and has only attracted more negative attention in the years since, as the age gap between Allen's Isaac Davis and Mariel Hemingway's Tracy has only become more cringe-inducing due to its parallels to Allen's real life. On the podcast Better Together with Anne & Heather, Hemingway acknowledged that the film "100 percent" couldn't be made today.

"That movie probably couldn’t come out today," Hemingway said. "100 percent."

Manhattan is based around the romance of Davis, who is 42, and Tracy, who is 17. It's a premise that would not have aged well regardless of who made it but it is especially controversial because of Allen, who has been accused of sexually assaulting his adoptive daughter Dylan Farrow when she was seven years old.

Despite Hemingway confirming that Manhattan was Allen "making a movie about sleeping with a 17-year-old girl," Hemingway said that she had a pleasant experience filming with him.

"[Woody Allen] wasn’t disrespectful of me or unpleasant. He was great. I loved him," she said.

Hemingway made it clear that she was not implying that Allen was innocent; she was simply speaking to her experience of working with him.
