Marvel fans have been waiting for the new “X-Men” cast announcement since Disney acquired Fox in 2019. In addition, several mutant characters have already made their appearance in the MCU. However, the big questions remain: when will Marvel Studios finally reveal who’s playing these iconic mutants? When will the mutant saga begin?

What We Know About the MCU “X-Men” Movie So Far

In addition, another big question for the Marvel Cinematic Universe became when the X-Men franchise would be rebooted in the studio. The MCU did start using mutants like Deadpool, Wolverine, Namor, Kamala Khan, who was revealed as a mutant at the end of “Ms. Marvel,” and Professor X. Also, although not officially confirmed, rumors have been swirling that “Stranger Things” star Sadie Sink will be playing Jean Grey in the upcoming “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.”

These breadcrumbs suggest that Marvel has long-term plans for the X-Men, which is huge considering that the Mutant Saga will begin after “Avengers: Secret Wars.” “Thunderbolts*” director Jake Schreier has been working on X-Men’s first MCU movie since last year, with writers attached since 2024. The film is still looking for an official title, release date, and cast to play the gifted heroes.

The studio is juggling multiple projects simultaneously across film and television, and inserting the X-Men into that pipeline requires careful coordination. Rushing a casting announcement before the creative foundation is solid would be a risk Marvel is unlikely to take. According to Deadline, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has described the X-Men integration as one of the most exciting creative challenges the studio has faced. He said, “We finally have the X-Men back.”

Why The X-Men Casting Announcement Is Taking So Long

If there is one thing Marvel has learned, it’s that focusing on too many projects at once can hurt putting out quality projects and a strong fandom. In speaking with Variety, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige admitted that “quantity trumped quality” in putting out content too quickly, creating an unnecessary feeling of homework for viewers. However, since the announcement and hype surrounding “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars,” Marvel has shifted gears.

In a statement obtained by LRM Online, Deadline journalist Justin Kroll shared on the “My Mom’s Basement” Podcast that Feige has been focused on the next two “Avengers” films in the Multiverse Saga. He said, “Reboot, all these things. He has been solely focused on this [Doomsday] and Secret Wars for, like, a year straight. Like, this has been it.”

Industry observers have noted that Marvel tends to announce cast members close to the start of production, not years in advance. Given that no production start date has been confirmed for the X-Men film, a full cast reveal is likely still some time away. Looking at Marvel’s history, major casting news tends to drop either at San Diego Comic-Con, D23, or through a surprise announcement tied to a production milestone.

What to Expect From The X-Men

The reveal of the Fantastic Four cast — Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach — followed this pattern, coming through a combination of fan events and press releases once the project was firmly in development. The X-Men announcement will likely follow a similar path. The MCU’s version of the X-Men will almost certainly look different from the Fox films.

Marvel will need to explain how mutants have existed in this universe without being widely known — a storytelling challenge the comics have tackled in various ways over the years. The multiverse angle offers one solution. The events of Secret Wars, widely expected to reshape the MCU, could serve as the entry point for mutants into the main continuity.

This would allow Marvel to introduce a fresh cast without erasing the legacy of the Fox films entirely. Until the studio makes an official casting announcement, everything is up in the air for speculation. What is clear is that the X-Men’s arrival in the MCU is no longer a matter of if — it’s a matter of when, and how big Marvel plans to go when they finally pull back the curtain.
