Brace yourself: the Internet has its hands on a clip from Megalopolis.
The first official clip released from Francis Ford Coppola’s latest and presumably last film is going viral for several reasons, the main one being star Adam Driver’s questionable line delivery.
In it, his character Cesar Catilina is having a domestic dispute with wife Julia Cicero (Nathalie Emmanuel). “You find me cruel, selfish and unfeeling? I am. I work without caring what happens to either of us. So go back to the club, bare it all, and stalk the kind of people that you enjoy.”
Driver’s elongated pronunciation of “club,” combined with his strange head shake, has captured the imagination of social media. It started small, with a few posters flagging up the weird mini moment. Then it caught on. Now there’s a torrent of Megalopolis memes and remixes.
The thing is, it’s not entirely mean-spirited. Rather than poking fun as with, say, Madame Web, most memes seem to be enjoying the film’s boldness in an era of film franchises, remakes, and endless sequels.
just kidding. what actually matters is doing the stupid idea and sharing it the stupid end result because there was joy in the process. and isn't that what megalopolis is about (??) https://t.co/ql7K7SU29Q pic.twitter.com/O92u8rzf1Q

Incredibly, it’s not the only memeable material in the 1:21 clip. “You think one year of medical school entitles you to plow through the riches of my Emersonian mind?” asks Driver. There’s also the otherworldly exchange where Emmanuel asks “entitles me?” three times, with Driver repeating the word “yes.”
Love it or hate it, it’s hard to ignore Megalopolis. Make sure to read our Megalopolis review: Francis Ford Coppola delivers disappointing chaos.
