Melanie Lynskey reveals how two 'Yellowjackets' Season 3 deaths were 'really surprising' to her

With the final episode of Yellowjackets now streaming on Paramount+ with Showtime, Melanie Lynskey recently shared her feelings on losing co-stars Simone Kessell and Lauren Ambrose after their adult characters were killed off the series.

"I adore both of those characters, and I adore both of those women. I don’t have favorites, but we were super close. So they both told me themselves," she told Variety. "The writers didn’t tell me that that was happening, and it was hard. It was not what anyone expected. I didn’t think they would be gone so quickly. There was a lot of processing that and listening to how they felt about it, and I felt a certain way about it. Obviously, I’m not in the writers’ room.

"I think people have an idea that they’ve mapped out the entire series arc for me, and they very much haven’t. Season 1, I got told in great detail what was going to happen. That was kind of all I needed to hear at that point. I was like, 'OK, they really have a plan.' Then they said, 'Season 2 is gonna focus on this. Season 3, we think this is going to happen.' It was very vague for the rest of it. I just needed to know that they actually had a plan, not just, like, a cool pilot. So I don’t know where the story is going. I have no idea. After this season, I have less of an idea," she continued to explain, "But both of those were really surprising to me. I wish we had more time. I trust the writers, I trust what they’re doing, but I would have loved to have had more scenes with Simone and more scenes with Lauren."

As for the most emotionally difficult scenes to film, she pointed to the last time she got to work with each of them, which supports what Kessell told EW.

"Melanie and I have cried a few times together. We're such close friends. Working together is just everything to us both. I don't understand. But look, on this show, I guess people are going to die, right? So people die. I just didn't see it coming," she admitted.

Adult Lottie is murdered in the fourth episode of the season. We later discover in the finale that Shauna's daughter Callie pushed her down the basement stairs, but it was not her intent to kill her.

"Well, the crazy thing is nobody called me or told me," Kessell said, reflecting on her character's death. "I was away in Montreal filming a show, and I hadn't heard from anybody, but I knew Yellowjackets was starting up. So it was actually my agent who called them and said, 'Hey, can we schedule a call?' And then we did. It was a very strange call because it sounded like they had good news, but I think because they're writers, they just thought it was cool. And they said, 'She dies.' And I was like, 'What?' I was so shocked. It was really weird. And look, I think if you ask any actor who's honest, it's always a bit shocking, especially if you love the show."

The actress also had to break the news to Courtney Eaton, who plays the teen version of Lottie.

Meanwhile, adult Van is stabbed to death in the ninth episode of the season by Melissa, her former teammate, who is played by Hilary Swank.

"At the beginning of the season, [the writers] decided that it would end in Van’s demise. I remember they weren’t sure exactly how but they were saying, a lot of bodies are gonna drop," Ambrose told ELLE. "That was their push for the season and I became very protective over the idea of Van’s death. I’ve never died on screen. And I knew people were gonna be upset, so I knew we had to tell the story well."

The series has not yet been renewed for a fourth season.
