The Metal Gear Solid movie is still very much happening.
A big-budget cinematic adaptation of Konami’s hit video game series is currently in development, with its producer recently issuing an update on its progress.
“We're working on the script some more, but I can't talk about it yet,” Ari Arad tells entertainment journalist Brian Crecente. “I think everyone's going to be really excited and surprised.”
Arad, who produced another popular video game adaptation in 2022’s Uncharted, continued, “These are just movies I want to make as good as possible, you know? I think getting Metal Gear right will obviously be amazing because I think it's a lot more meditative than some of the other adaptations. Personally, I want it to be terrific.”
It’s not the only game-to-film project on the horizon. Arad’s company, Arad Productions, is co-producing Borderlands, set in the universe of developer Gearbox’s looter shooter. A live-action Legend of Zelda movie is also in development.
“You know, they can take ten years,” Arad says. “But I think maybe it’ll speed up just because we’re all learning things. I’ve learned things about the ones that have been released and the ones we’re working on. But also by seeing what worked in other people’s adaptations.”
