Michael C. Hall talks 'Dexter: Resurrection' cameos and feeling protective of his character in new Yardbarker interview

Michael C. Hall is back as Dexter Morgan in Dexter: Resurrection! The first two episodes are now streaming and on demand for those who have the Paramount+ with SHOWTIME plan, so this interview will contain spoilers. The series will then make its on-air debut on Sunday, July 13 at 8 PM ET/PT.

DEXTER: RESURRECTION, a continuation of DEXTER®: NEW BLOOD, takes place weeks after Dexter Morgan takes a bullet to the chest from his own son, as he awakens from a coma to find Harrison gone without a trace. Realizing the weight of what he put his son through, Dexter sets out for New York City, determined to find him and make things right. But closure won’t come easy. When Miami Metro’s Angel Batista arrives with questions, Dexter realizes his past is catching up to him fast. As father and son navigate their own darkness in the city that never sleeps, they soon find themselves deeper than they ever imagined – and that the only way out is together.

The actor/executive producer spoke to Yardbarker about how he reacts to cameos from OG characters, continuing to show up for his character, and more:

"We write scripts ahead of time, of course, and everything, but a lot of it is on the fly, you know? You just have to keep showing up for the character, and yeah, I feel protective of him. I feel like I'm the guardian of my sense of his truth. I feel entrusted with that. I know how much this show means to people, how much this character means to people, and I feel a sense of responsibility in that sense," he explained. "And just day to day, if things are feeling off, if how we're getting from point A to point B feels like it could be navigated a different way, I chime in and try to make it better or more in sync with what feels truthful. But I think, broad strokes, I just wanted... I feel like Dexter has been through a sort of gauntlet of penance and has arrived at this place with this second chance of life, where things can be more fun and funny, and in a way that he and the show have earned. And so, that was important to me. I mean, obviously, he's still up to really dark things and his life is incredibly complicated and stressful beyond comprehension, but there's still opportunity for that levity."

New episodes of Dexter: Resurrection will premiere weekly.
