Michael Douglas says he is for all intents and purposes retired from acting

Michael Douglas was at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival to present a restored print of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" for its 50th anniversary. While Douglas was not in the Best Picture winner for 1975, he did produce it, as Douglas was producing well before he became a movie star. Not just a movie star, but one with an Oscar of his own for "Wall Street."

Douglas made some political points in his presentation, but of course also spent time talking about the film being screen as well as his own acting career. One thing he said is that we should all presume his acting career is over.

As Douglas explained:

I have not worked since 2022 purposefully because I realized I had to stop. I had been working pretty hard for almost 60 years, and I did not want to be one of those people who dropped dead on the set. I have no real intentions of going back. I say I’m not retired because if something special came up, I’d go back, but otherwise, no.

There you have it. It makes sense. Not only has Douglas made plenty of money through his career, he's turning 81 in 2025. Douglas memorably suffered from Stage IV tongue cancer that was found in 2010. It could have ended his life, much less his career. The only shame of it is that he had to spend the bulk of the end of his career churning out Marvel movies as Hank Pym.

Douglas does have a movie coming out this summer, though, that may serve aptly as his swan song. It's a small drama called "Looking for Water," which is scheduled for a release this summer. The film is a father-son story starring Michael Douglas and an actor named Cameron Douglas. Yes, Cameron is Michael's son, which means Michael will likely end his career with a movie he made with his kid. Better than ending it with "Quantumania," to be sure.
