Cooper Koch, who took on the role of Erik Menendez in Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, has earned an Emmy nomination for his performance in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie category.
"I spoke [with] Lyle today. He called to send his congrats and was very, very sweet," Koch told Entertainment Weekly for their The Awardist podcast. "He was just so, so sweet... and they're doing really well."
This is the second season of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s true-crime anthology series. It explores the real-life case of the Menendez brothers, who were convicted of the murders of their parents, José and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menendez, in 1996.
While the prosecution argued they were seeking to inherit their family fortune, the brothers claimed - and remain adamant to this day, as they serve life sentences without the possibility of parole - that their actions stemmed out of fear from a lifetime of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse at the hands of their parents. Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story dives into the historic case that took the world by storm, paved the way for audiences’ modern-day fascination with true crime, and in return asks those audiences: Who are the real monsters?
The series also earned nominations in the following categories: Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for Javier Bardem, and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for Chloë Sevigny.

The actor continued to express that the "best part about this whole thing was just getting the opportunity to be a part of this show and tell this story and just embody this person who I just care so deeply about."
Off-screen, he has been very vocal with his support for the brothers. "We’re still sort of living with what’s happening in real time with their case. They go to the parole board on Aug. 21st and Aug. 22nd, so I’m just hoping that I can talk more about and advocate for them," Koch shared with The Hollywood Reporter. "I’m like, screw myself. I just want to get them out of prison."
Unfortunately, Nicholas Alexander Chavez, who portrayed Lyle, and Ari Graynor, who plays Leslie Abramson, were not nominated. "I talked to Ari; I’m devastated that she didn’t get it," he explained. "That’s the one sort of bummer from today that she didn’t get it. Same thing with Nicholas. I think both of them really deserved to be on there, so I’m super bummed that they didn’t get nominated."
Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story is streaming on Netflix.
